It should be obvious, but for the avoidance of any doubt, this is a personal blog/journal and is nothing to do with my former employers. (Who, incidentally, rock in many ways.) Even my imaginatively-titled work-related blog is unofficial.
Linking: I'm delighted if you want to link to anything I've written (except friends-locked/restricted/private posts). But please don't link my real name to it. (This helps keep the distinction between my personal stuff and my work stuff.) So, for instance, posting it on Twitter or Facebook would be fine, but linking my Twitter or Facebook accounts as you do so would not. Just linking to the post (rather than cut-and-pasting it) is plenty enough attribution. Thanks!
"They [...] said ... I had to see ... Doug. Well, I was terrified. Everyone was terrified of Doug. I've seen grown men pull their own heads off rather than see Doug."
That was a very different Doug. We were all young and foolish once. Am I the Doug you're looking for? It's hard to say, but if he looks like my userpics, then yes. If the Doug you're looking for owes you large sums of money or is needed to help police with their inquiries, then no.
I agree with dear old J.B.S. Haldane: "Now, my own suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose." And it is endlessly fascinating because of it. Or at least, I find it so. People and human endeavour particularly, but the natural world too. Although I don't share the Creator's inordinate fondness for beetles.
Usenet News has been described as "the textual version of 50 people standing in a room, where some of them are talking to one another, some are screaming, some are staring at the walls and drooling and none of them are paying the slightest attention to what any of the others is saying."
LiveJournal is like that, except that it isn't so much a series of separate rooms as a series of freakshow booths spilling out on to each other, with endless crowds of people hustling, jostling, arguing, spitting, hitting each other and (above all) ogling.
And of course this is why I can't leave it alone.

"Everybody wants prosthetic foreheads on their real heads." - They Might Be Giants (Hard though it may be to believe, my own is, I hasten to add, entirely natural.)
"a load of breezy people who go around saying yaka-wow" - The Right Hon Prof The Baroness Greenfield CBE, on me and my online chums
"Let us understand, once and for all, that the ethical progress of society depends, not on imitating the cosmic process, still less in running away from it, but in combating it." - T. H. Huxley
"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." - Benjamin Franklin, probably just as apocryphally as the liberty/safety thing but less contestedly.
"If we expand the pie for the common interest, the pie will be larger and more delicious." - Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo on Sino-American relations in the Wikileaks diplomatic cables. Mmm, expanded pie.
"If you're the smartest person in the room, go look for a room with smarter people in it." - kevinpet at Hacker News
"We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart." - H. L. Mencken making a more profound point than the surface sexism and general casual misanthropy might lead you to believe
"A smell of petroleum pervades throughout." - The secret of the universe, as inspired by laughing-gas, via William James and Betrand Russell.
"We are as gods and might as well get good at it" - Stewart Brand, 1968
"We are as gods and HAVE to get good at it" - Stewart Brand, 2009
"Believing this statement will make you happier." - Ryan Lortie
"Beneath the elaborately constructed veneer of the bumbling buffoon, there may well be a bumbling buffoon. That is the nightmare we all have to live with." - Boris Johnson, on Boris Johnson, in 2003
"I can handle things! I'm smart! Not like everybody says, like dumb, I'm smart and I want respect!" - Fredo Corleone
"Regular didgeridoo playing is an effective treatment alternative well accepted by patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome." - BMJ 2006;332:266
"It is a profoundly erroneous truism, repeated by all copy-books and by eminent people when they are making speeches, that we should cultivate the habit of thinking of what we are doing. The precise opposite is the case. Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking about them. Operations of thought are like cavalry charges in a battle -- they are strictly limited in number, they require fresh horses, and must only be made at decisive moments." - A. N. Whitehead.
"By broadening the base of our knowledge of man [sic] and the universe, we also broaden our base for the construction and understanding of jokes of all kinds (not merely word play) and raise the store of fun and laughter in the world." - Isaac Asimov (in his Treasury of Humor) making the best argument possible for research and culture: more puns.
"We imagine ourselves at the apex of intelligence, and cannot believe that the quaint clothes and cumbrous phrases of former times can have invested people and thoughts that are still worthy of our attention." - Bertrand Russell, who else. Maybe I should delete this entire thing and say "just go read more Bertrand Russell".

"[T]hose who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences." - C. S. Lewis
[O]ne thing a person cannot do, no matter how rigorous his analysis or heroic his imagination, is to draw up a list of the things that would never occur to him.” - Thomas Schelling, unverifiably, proving his own point with needlessly exclusive pronouns.
Duces and Fuehrers will cease to plague the world only when the majority of its inhabitants regard such adventurers with the same disgust as they now bestow on swindlers and pimps. So long as men worship the Caesars and Napoleons, Caesars and Napoleons will duly arise and make them miserable. - Aldous Huxley
"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge" - Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man, presciently explaining social media, the commentariat, and why 'strong opinions, weakly held' is bad.
"There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing" - Alfred Wainwright. A mountaineer friend points out that this is true if-and-only-if you accept that for some weather conditions the appropriate clothing is an extremely sturdy building.
