Don Ricardo on Instagram: "A flash of inspiration as I was using a wire tool to carve off slabs of clay moved me to create this collection of functional art/ sculptural vases. I have been inspired by Palaeolithic tools, which I now collect, but I wasn’t too sure how to translate that into my work. I didn’t want to recreate the shapes, as much as the feeling, the primal chipping away at rock. A raw, energetic and expressive moment. The wire tool, along with the randomness of extracting blocks of clay is pushing me into a direction that I’m liking. Truely, the clay is speaking to me and I can only listen and respond. The idea behind the pieces are if Neanderthals were into Ikebana, what would their vases look like? This has been the last 24 hours, so I am excited to see where I go.
