Danish startup secures €20M to boost green hydrogen production with 1-MW dynamic electrolyser unit Copenhagen-based Dynelectro has successfully raised €11 million to advance its 1-MW Dynamic Electrolyser Unit (DEU) technology, aimed at accelerating the green hydrogen economy. The funding round saw participation from prominent investors such as Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), Yara Growth Ventures, Vsquared Ventures, PSV DeepTech, The Footprint Firm. Additionally, Dynelectro secured €9 million in grants through partnerships with industry leaders like Shell and the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). This is a very interesting insight but it is not unique to hydrogen, it is symbolic of the deep tech industry as a whole, where you raise large amounts of money and spend large amounts of money. The focus to often being on marketing and promises. This is not sustainable in the long term; however, it doesn't need to be this way. We need to bring thinking around profitability to the deep tech industry right from the start, not just profitability of the product itself but for the company as a whole. Instead of looking from the bottom up (adding up the cost of subcomponents and labour to make a product) look at it from the top down (total number of products divided by total costs = real cost to make a product). This is not popular because it doesn't make sense when you are a new start-up, and when you are no longer a start-up it is often a scary number. But it is good practice to be thinking this way right from the outset. At Oort Energy we are trying to think differently to develop a sustainable company. We are doing this by: - staying lean from the outset (we are delivering MW scale products with just 25 people and low manufacturing overheads) - introducing quality control measures into manufacturing from the get go - good financial controls with proper budget setting and justification of spend - a razor sharp focus on delivery - setting the vision and values early on and sticking to them - growing our manufacturing capability with the market Gigafactories cost a lot to build and lot to operate. They are undoubtedly the lowest cost option when you are selling gigawatt's of products per annum. But if you are not close to capacity, they don't always look like such a good investment from the top down. It is time to think differently! #greenhydrogen #leanmanufacturing #teamculture

Swedish battery storage developer Flower has closed a series A funding round at €45 million, bringing total investment in the company to €100 million. Flower’s Series A round was led by Northzone with additional investment from: Giant Ventures; 82an Invest (a joint venture between the Wallenberg Foundation’s FAM and returning investor 41an Invest, the investment vehicle of H&M founder and CEO Karl-Johan Persson and Glocalnet and Kivra founder Stefan Krook); Sony Innovation Fund; and angel investors Thomas von Koch (partner at the EQT Foundation), and founder of game developer King, Sebastian Knutsson. Northzone general partner Pär-Jörgen Pärson has also joined Flower’s board. Flower will deploy this latest capital towards its pan-European expansion plans, as well as furthering development of its battery energy storage systems. Active currently in Sweden and Denmark, Flower will become operational also throughout the DACH region [Germany, Austria and Switzerland], France, the Netherlands, and Belgium throughout 2025 and 2026. 🔋 #BatteryMarket News & Updates: As reported a few weeks ago, Swedish battery cell manufacturer Northvolt is undergoing significant changes as it faces hurdles in production and market demand. The company has appointed Pia Aaltonen-Forsell as its new Chief Financial Officer, while former CFO Alexander Hartman transitions to the role of Chief Transformation Officer. These leadership shifts come in the wake of #BMW cancelling a billion-euro order due to quality and delivery issues at #Northvolt's Skellefteå factory. The plant is reportedly struggling with low output and high reject rates, prompting a review of the company's ambitious international expansion plans. Northvolt is currently seeking new financing of around one billion euros, but negotiations have proven challenging due to lower-than-expected production volumes. Hydrogen and PtX are not yet ready for large scale investments. There is a hype around hydrogen that has now cooled down. Final investment decisions have been made on very few projects. And that is probably correct. Like all new industries they will be affected by childhood diseases, so it is not smart to have such facilities distributed across numerous sites. Glocal Green and Norwegian Hydrogen team up on large-scale bio-e-methanol production In Norway, Glocal Green and Norwegian Hydrogen have entered into a collaboration agreement on large-scale production of what is also known as bio-e-methanol. While Glocal Green is focusing on the possibilities within bio-methanol as its contribution to the green shift, Norwegian Hydrogen is a company that is producing and building an infrastructure for green hydrogen. The two companies have now come together and identified a very exciting collaboration project. Glocal Green will produce bio-methanol based on biological waste and residual industrial raw materials that can also be used as fuel for internal combustion engines, and as a hydrogen carrier for fuel cells. According to Dag Nikolai Ryste, CEO of Glocal Green, this is a value chain that can become 100% circular, and the company is now planning production on a large scale. The size of the facilities may vary, but Glocal Green believes that the optimal size is about 100,000 metric tons of annual production per facility. This corresponds to a raw material requirement per facility of approx. 80,000 tons of biomass and up to approx. 10,000 tons of green hydrogen. Researchers from Linköping University, Karlstad University, and Chalmers University in Sweden have created a new, affordable zinc-lignin battery. This battery can handle 8,000 charging cycles and still keep 80% of its performance. Made from common, recyclable materials, this battery is better for the environment and more ethical than lithium-ion batteries. Traditional zinc batteries break down because they react with water, but this new battery uses a water-in-polymer salt electrolyte to stay stable. Uniper has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Liquid Wind to strategically develop production facilities for eFuels. Uniper has since many years invested and cooperated with Liquid Wind and we are now taking the next step in our cooperation. By combining Unipers strong position in delivering green electricity, hydrogen production, trading capabilities and strong asset owner and operator with Liquid Winds strong and unique eFuels asset development capabilities we are building a strong partnership to decarbonize the marine sector. Decarbonization of the transport sector and industry are key to reach the Net Zero targets. Especially in Sweden where the electricity system already is basically green and fossile free through our hydro, nuclear and wind production the focus is to decarbonize these sectors.
