OpenMandriva Lx

Last Update: 2026-02-03 16:21 UTC

The OpenMandriva distribution is a full-featured Linux desktop and server, sponsored by the OpenMandriva Association. It was based on ROSA, a Russian Linux distribution project which forked Mandriva Linux in 2012, incorporating many of Mandriva's original tools and utilities and adding in-house enhancements. The goal of OpenMandriva is to facilitate the creation, improvement, promotion and distribution of free and open-source software in general, and OpenMandriva projects in particular. OpenMandriva has traditionally been a fixed release distribution, but in 2023 the project began releasing an alternative rolling branch called ROME.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 44 (239), 6 months: 82 (185), 3 months: 103 (158), 4 weeks: 113 (147), 1 week: 118 (144)

Average visitor rating: 8.4/10 from 82 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

The easiest distro I've ever used. I've played with Linux distros before but I was on Windows 11 until 6 months ago. I've never really liked most of the distros i've used, there was always some issue or software I couldn't use because no clear way to make it work or install it.
Open Mandriva has been the most hassle free Linux I've ever used. Everything on the back end is already there so apps just work. Heck I have a few Windows apps that just immediately opened in Wine on just double clicking the exe and they just worked. App images work without issue, well except for one but Gear Lever app helped integrate it properly. It comes with every basic tool or app you need and no bloatware.
ZNVER1 ISO installer for AMD CPU users was a nice touch. Boot up is nearly instant, Welcome menu helps you install most desired apps right away by clicking on them. I'm using this as my gaming OS and It's absolutely flawless and the performance is much better then a few other distros that advertise them selves as gaming optimized ones.
Installing Steam for games is just a few clicks and that's it. I wish there was a local app browser for it similar to Discover or Bazaar but instead of flatpacks, it just shows you what's on the OS provided repos. I know Dnfdrake is there, but it's navigation is clunky and doesn't have a discovery view. That's my only issue and I haven't really seen any OS do that either.
I only had to use terminal once and that was to install the hardware rules for OpenRGB.

It's weird to say this but OM is easier then Win11 to use. Consider this, on Win11 you have to run several anti-spyware apps and tweaking apps to remove all of Microsoft's built in spyware and telemetry bloat. They are complicated and make it easy to brick you system. OM doesn't have those problems to start with, so you just install your apps and just start using it. Even most popular Linux distros have a lot of bloat like Ubuntu, Mint, Bazzite and Zorin for example. OM places you at the starting line, holds your hand just enough to where you find what you need with out getting lost, but lets you choose your pace and direction.
I'm never going back to Windows. I'm here to stay until the heat death of the universe.

I'm testing Rock 6.0 after begin on Fedora KDE for some months. As a daily driver most of the things work as expected however compared to Fedora I encountered these issues:

1. Unable to install some packages like: nordvpn, portmaster
I even by looking at the posts on OM forum I still wasn't able to make nordvpn install correctly. Had problems installing VeraCrypt too, but they have an .appimage version so was able to run that

2. The Autostart GUI does not work. Its impossible to add apps on autostart, the change is undo when you change menu. There is a manual way to do it, but whats the point of making life harder.

3. Issue with Nextcloud account integration. Dolphin does not connect with it.

4. Unable to show the "Calendar Events" option in Digital Clock, because of errors installing kdepim-runtime kdepim-addons

5. The Wallet password kept being asked after reboot, also the admin pswd seems to get asked many more times compared to Fedora, even though I added myself on wheel and change the config to nopasswd line in sudoers, and remove the timeout for requesting it.

Anyway I still believe its a nice linux distro to use as daily driver. The Multimedia/Codecs stuff was easier then Fedora

I had some doubts about OpenMandriva because I didn't know it, but all my doubts have been dispelled!
It's a really well-made Linux distro!

It boots up quickly and has excellent graphics, which are also highly customisable.
It's a distro that truly embodies open source, giving users a great deal of freedom, and it's just as stable and up-to-date as the more famous ones.

OpenMandriva was a wonderful surprise, both in the rolling and stable branches, and I highly recommend trying it!
Congratulations to all the developers for doing such a great job!
Keep up the good work because you have many admirers in the open source world!
