Crunchbangplusplus, a continuation of CrunchBang Linux which was discontinued in 2015, is a minimalist distribution based on the latest stable Debian release while featuring the lightweight Openbox window manager. It is available for both i686 and x86_64 processor architectures.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Colour scheme:green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Credit where credit's due. It seems that Crunchbang++ is maintained by one person, but what an unbelievable lightweight, stable distro this is.
I was looking to get off lightweight Ubuntu (turns out Lubuntu/Xubuntu aren't that light once they start installing snap packages) and this has been a revelation. Even faster than Xfce, and all the Openbox/GTK customisation and theming options available for it are fantastic, I've had a lot of fun just making it look different and friendlier than all my other PCs. The install also managed to get the audio up and running straight away on my old Chromebook, which the standard Debian install failed to do.
With Crunchbang++ running Debian 13, I know my old laptops will be in a great state for years to go. I might even install it on my desktop PC. Once installed, it flies. My new favorite distro.
1. Flawless install.
2. Even more lightweight than CBPP 12, at least for me, on a cold boot it is very noticeable.
3. Stable and reliable thanks to the base of Debian 13: "Trixie".
4. Fast and snappy thanks to Openbox.
5. Trustworthy, it's been around for 10 years.
6. If you liked the previous versions of CBPP then you will enjoy this release.
7. Looking for a lightweight distro? Then this is the one, and if you've been wanting to try out or learn the stacking window manager Openbox then CBPP 13 is the perfect choice.

Tried the stable version 12 bookwarm 32 bit, a bit confusing in the installation, some uncertainty in the live but once installed it is excellent, uses about 500 mb in idle, you have to fiddle a bit with the sources.list to get the working repositories and update firefox esr. A no frills distro fast and efficient especially for old machines, nice geek look.
It is however a distro not for the average user but a user who already has a minimum of familiarity with linux.
Excellent compromise between the great stability and reliability of debian and the lightness of openbox and in general a minimal and essential front end for a fairly expert user as already said.
