Bodhi Linux

Last Update: 2026-01-17 13:48 UTC

Bodhi Linux is an elegant and lightweight Debian/Ubuntu-based distribution featuring Moksha, an Enlightenment-17-based desktop environment. The project takes a decidedly minimalist approach by offering modularity, high levels of customisation, and choice of themes. Bodhi releases come in several editions, including Standard (64-bit) and Legacy (32-bit) which are minimalist, only including a web browser, terminal, file manger, text editor and photo GUI applications, while the AppPack edition includes more applications and tools preinstalled. Additional software can be added with Bodhi's web-based AppCenter, Synaptic, and APT.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Bodhi Linux 7.0.0 Standard edition is amazing. It ran like a champ on my early 2015 MacBook Air with 4 GB of RAM, Intel CPU, and 128 GB of SSD storage. The AppPack edition is loaded with apps, but still lightweight. I like the minimalist, standard edition because I like less software on my computer to keep things secure and I generally know what I need on Linux. I’ve used Bodhi off and on for a while and it always breathes new life into old machines. It makes my fairly powerful computers run well and smooth too. The boot times are good (boots and shuts down instantly). The OS also includes an app center which is nice and may be missing from other lightweight Linux distros. It’s even online as a website. Much easier to use than Synaptic Package manager, although Synaptic’s included in Bodhi Linux AppPack. The Discord server is active and pretty friendly. The devs/team do get involved and provide support and so do so many of the regular users. I couldn't imagine computing for the past seven years without this great Linux distribution.

I’m leaving a 9/10 rating.

Of all the light weight distros out there this Bodhi Linux is the only one that does not appear to make graphical / usability sacrifices in favour of speed and flexibility. That is not to say it is completely beginner friendly but at no point do stumble upon a brick wall that requires a deeper knowledge of linux. All major apps are easy to install and the interface has a design language that feels coherent and very well thought out.

The long support cycle is also great for those that want to eke out a few more years of useful computing out of technically limited hardware.

It's not cutting edge by many means but that's not the point. It is stable and usable and for those that want to keep hardware out of landfill for as long as possible it's a great choice.

A complete Linux novice, fed up with using Windows, I was looking for an alternative. I tried Mint, Lite, PopOS, and Lubuntu, but finally settled on Bodhi Linux; it's fantastic.

I've installed it on the following machines:

a) AMD Ryzen 5 4600g with 16 GB of RAM: Hardware Enablement Edition.
b) Intel Celeron N3060 with 4 GB of RAM: Standard Edition.

Both have performed flawlessly, very stable and minimalist. It includes an app store that makes installing applications easy, a forum where users are always supportive, an elegant desktop environment despite its low resource consumption, extensive Moksha customization, and many other features that give Bodhi Linux its own unique identity. I really don't understand why it isn't more popular.

For me, it's a 11/10. I'm thrilled to be writing this review from my copy of Bodhi Linux on my PC, and I'm sure my PC loves using this operating system too.
