Community Profile

This is a community for all of us with disabilities to rage about the overwhelming ableist bullshit in the world around us. It's a place to vent our anger and frustration with the inaccessibility, the condescension, the ignorance, the mistreatment – in short, the rage-making things we're forced to fight every day.

This is a rage community. We like anger. We think it's healthy and happy to be angry. Rage is most effective when it stays more or less on target, though, and to that end, the comm has a few guidelines:

• Don't flame other people by name. Don't flame other comms by name, or link to your post here on that comm. Flame wars about flame wars are by definition lose/lose scenarios, and besides they'll dilute the rage we're all here to vent.


• Membership is open to people with disabilities and non-disabled allies, and while posting is restricted to members, it is unmoderated, and your friendly neighborhood moderator does not need to know which one you are or what your disability is. (She does suggest that non-disabled allies double-check when posting to ensure they are not perpetuating the ableism they rage against.) By the same token, if you turn out to be a blatant troll, the moderator will not hesitate to ban your ass, whatever your disability status.


• There's a poll up to get input on moderation of membership and moderation & locking of posts. The moderator is inclined to refuse to moderate anything and anybody, but is aware of the dangers of trolling & is willing to listen to arguments for some degree of moderation. —24 April 2010


• We're all about the rage here. That said, please keep in mind that everyone's experience of disability is different. Also, don't use racist, sexist, or otherwise marginalizing language – the last thing we need is something else to rage about. This is a safe space, and if there is anything that makes you uncomfortable or unsafe, please contact the moderator (by Dreamwidth private message, email at hilarytamar@dreamwidth.org, or screened commenting on the introductory post).


• Please try to keep your formatting as close as possible to Dreamwidth's default formatting. That way, other members can apply their own preferred style when they access it. In particular, please try not to change the color, type, or size of your font. If you can, avoid using all capital letters.
