This magnificently scared-looking face represents the art of Tragedy, especially in the theater. It is part of a statue of Melpomene, the Muse of Tragedy, who holds the mask with her right hand. Masks like this one were actually worn by actors on stage during Roman times to emphasize the role they were playing. It is thought this particular mask represented the Greek hero Heracles.
