Europe's security debate is sharpening. At the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, a DW Conflict Zone panel moderated by Sarah Kelly examined Europe's defense outlook amid shifting alliances and rising geopolitical pressure. During the discussion, Kelly asked the NATO Chief Mark Rutte a pointed question: "Is Europe's security still dependent on US political demands?" His response sheds light on how European leaders view autonomy and transatlantic security at a moment of heightened uncertainty. 📺 Watch the full discussion here: https://p.dw.com/p/57CbW

Where multilateral alliances are in question and a multipolar world order may be emerging, it is all the more imperative that we stay in touch with each other. So that we foster mutual understanding and try to identify common ground. Free, independent, and multi-perspective reporting – from the US to the world, and from Germany and Europe to the US – is a crucial first step toward better understanding. 🏛️ This moment marks the perfect timing for DW to move into a new shared office with our ARD colleagues from WDR and Norddeutscher Rundfunk. Thank you to Dr. Katrin Vernau, Ines Pohl, Dr. Nadja Scholz and all the teams who made this happen! In today's challenging news environment, strengthening joint structures and leveraging synergies is more important than ever. I am confident that our DW team in Washington will benefit greatly from this collaboration. On this occasion, I had the opportunity to deepen my own impressions through conversations with key players on site, including senior representatives of NPR and PBS, Ambassador Jens Hanefeld (Embassy of Germany in Washington, D.C.), Constanze Stelzenmüller (Director of the Center on the United States and Europe, Brookings Institution), and Nile Gardiner (Director of the Margaret Thatcher Center, Heritage Foundation). In our discussions, one message stood out: independent, fact-based media is a cornerstone of democratic societies. We have a responsibility to strengthen it and to build connections that will help safeguard its future. 🌍 This is where DW's unique international orientation comes into play. From Washington, we report not only in English and German, but also in Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Chinese – and soon Arabic. Our multilingual team brings diverse perspectives and expertise to contextualize developments on the ground. This is one of our greatest strengths. A heartfelt thank you to our DW team in Washington for their hospitality, to our ARD and WDR colleagues for fostering this network, and to the numerous conversation partners who shared their perspectives and insights. 📷 Nils Hünerfürst

Deutsche Welle has been declared an “undesirable organization” in Russia. While we have been listed as “foreign agent” since 2022 – the year we also faced a broadcasting ban and had to forcibly close our studio in Moscow, not long before Russia attacked Ukraine – this is an escalation of the crackdown on DW. Russia may label us an undesirable organization, but that won’t deter us. This latest attempt to silence free media highlights the Russian regime’s blatant disregard for press freedom and exposes its fear of independent information. The implications this has on our users in Russia and on everyone working for DW are severe: ➡️ The law effectively criminalizes engaging with DW – sharing content of DW on social media is now considered a crime. Cooperating with "undesirable organizations" is a criminal offense in Russia, subject to heavy fines and, in severe cases, imprisonment. ➡️ For Russian citizens, the ban on cooperation also applies outside Russian territory. This means that Russian employees of DW are particularly affected. ➡️ There is a serious and very high risk of arrest for our staff when travelling to Russia. This concerns everyone working for DW, DW Akademie or any of DW’s subsidiaries, regardless of citizenship. Our DW Management team had already issued an urgent travel warning last year, which we have now reiterated. However, DW will not be muted, and we will not abandon our users in Russia. We will continue offering unbiased reporting. What users can do now: ➡️ Find out what this means for DW – and how you can stay in touch without risking prosecution: https://p.dw.com/p/55KAb ➡️ Get informed about how to securely bypass censorship on our dedicated info page: https://lnkd.in/ePMQki_S ➡️ Learn about our new DW Access App, launched earlier this month: https://lnkd.in/e5Kpt4VW ➡️ Download the DW Access App here: https://lnkd.in/e6HQ57VH We will closely monitor the developments and will keep you informed. DW Documentary "Politzek – Voices that Defy the Kremlin" is now available on the DW Documentary YouTube channels. 🎞️ In Russia, criticizing the war in Ukraine or the government has become a criminal offense. Thousands of citizens have been arrested, tried and imprisoned as so-called "Politzek" – political prisoners. Filmed over more than a year, the documentary combines investigative depth with personal stories such as: ▪️ Arseny Turbin, targeted at just 14 for critical comments about Putin and sentenced to five years in prison. ▪️ Sasha Skochilenko, jailed for anti-war messages disguised as price tags in a grocery store, sentenced to seven years in a penal colony and freed after two years in a prisoner exchange. The film also features human rights activist Oleg Orlov, a long-standing voice for civil society in Russia. A co-production by Babel Doc and Clin d'oeil films, in cooperation with France Télévisions, and co-produced with DW, SWR, RTBF and VRT. DW premiered the documentary in Berlin on November 27 before 300 international guests, including Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov, Orlov, Sasha Skochilenko and the directors Manon Loizeau, Ekaterina Mamontova and Sacha (Alexandra) Koulaeva. ➡️ Watch now on DW Documentary YouTube (links in comments). ℹ️ More about the premiere: https://lnkd.in/ehibdeRs
