Last week, we hosted two delegations from Ghana at our headquarters in Bonn. We were happy to welcome back the Young Diplomats of Ghana (YDG), as well as students from the SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College in Accra. 🌍 During our events, the participants engaged in insightful discussions on the challenges facing the local media landscape, brainstormed potential new topics for our show The 77 Percent, and explored the many offerings of DW's Africa programs. The bottom line is once again: Direct and unfiltered feedback from our target audience is invaluable! 💚 Representing DW were Asumpta Lattus, Adwoa Domena, Michael N. Oti and Philipp Schneider.

Santos, this series dives deep into Filipino life and culture, exploring how sexuality is woven into everyday spaces. "The U.S. President has weakened liberty and strengthened autocrats," says DW's Director General Peter Limbourg. The news cycle has already moved on to the next topic, and I fear the gravity of Trump's decision to defund the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) has not been fully grasped, as it should have been. Gutting USAGM is a massive blow to press freedom worldwide. I made this clear in a press conference this week, talking primarily with German media, followed by several interviews throughout the day. This way, we at Deutsche Welle helped put the issue on the agenda. https://p.dw.com/p/4rqtF The truth is, this decision affects more than 420 million users worldwide, some of whom are now losing their only source of reliable information, because they live in restricted markets. The U.S. President has weakened liberty and strengthened autocrats. USAGM includes, among others, the international broadcaster Voice of America. Founded during World War II, it had, until now, received bipartisan support. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is also part of this effort to promote press freedom and democratic values and has been equally affected by the cuts. Europe must act now. We must try to help RFE/RL but we must also strengthen the existing international media outlets like France Medias Monde, BBC and DW. This would be an important message to the U.S., but also to autocrats around the world, who must have popped champagne when they heard the news. As RFE/RL President Steve Capus put it: "The cancellation of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's grant agreement would be a massive gift to America's enemies." I could not agree more. We stand in firm solidarity with Michael Abramowitz of Voice of America, Steve Capus of RFE/RL, Bay Fang of Radio Free Asia, and all employees working for programs under the umbrella of USAGM. As your partners, and as journalists, we will continue to do everything we can to reach people all over the world with unbiased news and information.

💻 🚀 Hackathon in der DW – es ist wieder so weit! Vom 10. bis 12. März 2025 veranstaltet die DW einen internen Hackathon “Hacking for freedom” zur Zensurumgehung in Bonn. Ziel: Prototypen bauen, die den Menschen freien Zugang zu DW-Inhalten ermöglichen. Der Zeitpunkt ist bewusst gewählt: Heute, am 12. März, ist der Welttag gegen Zensur im Internet (“World Day against Cyber Censorship”). Der Tag macht darauf aufmerksam, wie Regierungen auf der ganzen Welt die freie Meinungsäußerung im Internet behindern und zensieren. Die DW möchte mit dieser und weiteren Aktivitäten ein aktives Zeichen gegen Zensur setzen. 🔇 Denn: Internationale Informationsanbieter wie die DW sind zunehmend unerwünscht – und gewinnen gerade dadurch an Bedeutung. Staatliche Zensurmaßnahmen schränken den Zugang zu Informationen erheblich ein. 🗯️ 💡 Unter der Headline „Reaching the Unreachable“ diskutierten die DW-Expert*innen Ingo Mannteufel, Sebastian Katthöver und Esther Kleine gestern im Rahmen einer DW Minds-Veranstaltung mit Patrick Böhler - der Internet-Freedom-Experte und preisgekrönte New York Times-Journalist unterstützt Nachrichtenredaktionen beim Aufbau antiautokratischer Resilienz. 👉 Unsere Verantwortung: Zielgruppen trotz Zensur erreichen. Wir müssen immer wieder neue Wege finden, um Menschen in zensierten Zielländern zu erreichen – durch verschlüsselte Plattformen, dezentrale Netzwerke oder innovative Verbreitungsmethoden. ❗ ❗ Fakten dürfen nicht Opfer digitaler Repression werden, freier Zugang zu unabhängigen Informationen ist wichtiger denn je.
