Our large Nictoiana medallion is a swirl of botany, large petals, leaves undulating within a textured rolled edge, embellished with a rich deep blue faceted Sri Lankan Sapphire. Nicotiana a genus of plants in the family Solanaceae, is a member of the nightshade family. It is indigenous to the Americas, and among the ancient Maya, the dried leaves of the plant were considered a sacred, supernaturally powerful plant, a primordial medicine or "botanical helper", associated with Maya deities of the earth and sky. Various Nicotiana species, commonly referred to as tobacco plants, are cultivated as ornamental garden plants. Jean Nicot presented the tobacco plant to Queen Catherine de Medicis at the House of Lorraine in 1655, who believed it to be medicinal, a remedy for her intense migrain headaches.
