In my school, we use daily 5 for reading instruction. I set up daily 5 a little bit different. I teach third grade and there is just so much to fit in! When I was trying to fit in all daily 5 rotations a day I was not getting to the important stuff and I was not having enough time with my students. So, I do one rotation a day for 20-30 minutes. The students do each rotations for daily 5 once a week and they meet with me once a week.

If you've been reading my blog for awhile, you might know that using a basal to teach is not exactly my style, so this is a HUGE change for me. In an ideal world, I would use a reading workshop…

the daily 5 schedule for students to read and practice their reading skills, including an open book

This August, I made the decision to implement The Daily 5 in my second grade classroom. In planning for teaching a new grade level at a new school with a completely different structure for reading instruction, I figured Daily 5 would be my best bet for incorporating guided reading into my reading block while keeping my sanity. I honestly didn’t know much about Daily 5 when I initially bought the book, but was pleasantly surprised when the positive reviews I had read were true. The Daily 5…
