Description
Deutsch: Durch den Architekten Otto Engler geplanter Neubau des Warenhauses S. Wronker & Co. auf der südlichen Seite der Zeil in Frankfurt am Main, eröffnet am 5. Mai 1908, in seinem ursprünglichen Zustand (vor Erweiterung im 2. Bauabschnitt 1910). Die Fassade wirkt ziemlich hell (Muschelkalkstein). 1908 lautete die Anschrift Zeil 33–35 bzw. auf der Hausrückseite Holzgraben 6–8. 1911 wurden die Hausnummern in diesem Abschnitt durch Zusammenführung von Neuer Zeil und (alter) Zeil geändert. – An der auf dem Foto sichtbaren unfertig wirkenden Seitenwand zum Nebengebäude bemerkt man in den oberen Etagen Türen, die zu einer Außentreppe führen. Nicht nur dort, sondern bei Betrachtung der gesamten Dachkonstruktion lässt sich deutlich erkennen, dass von Anfang an eine bauliche Erweiterung geplant war. Zu dieser Seite hin (westlich, Richtung Hauptwache) wurde an das Warenhausgebäude im 2. Bauabschnitt 1910 in gleicher Weise angebaut (vergleiche: jüngere Fotografien hier bei Commons). Das links (östlich, Richtung Konstablerwache) angrenzende Geschäftshaus Zeil 31 (rund 4000 m2 Verkaufsfläche) wurde durch Hermann Wronker erworben und 1927/28 durch den Architekten Fritz Nathan durch einen Passageneingang (hier bei Commons abrufbar) angegliedert. – Der Fotograf dieser Aufnahme positionierte sich in einer oberen Etage der Frankfurter Hauptpost (Kaiserliche Oberpostdirection).
English: Newly erected department store S. Wronker & Co. of Frankfurt am Main in its initial state (before expansions), opened on 5 May 1908. Later expansions were added primarily to the right, in westerly direction. In 1927/28 the adjoining commercial building (larger shop windows) on the left of the dept. store was incorporated. The photographer placed himself on an upper floor of Frankfurt's main post office.
