Summary

[edit]
Description

Pectoral (a chest ornament) About 1 AD to 800 AD Made during the Yotoco period of the Calima people of the Isthmian Region of Colombia

Made of hammered gold, about 9" by 12"

Pectorals were some of the largest and most detailed objects that the Calima made. Yotoco culture was organized around chiefdoms, and chiefs may have worn a pectoral like this (along with arm bands, a headdress, and ear and nose jewelry). Gold had complex symbolism for the Yotoco culture of the Calima people, embodying light and fertilization.
