Description
English: There is a small but significant correlation between seat belt use and fatality rate, despite survivability in an automobile accident being reduced by three to four times by not wearing a seat belt. The data shows that avoiding an accident is the best way to prevent highway fatalities. Massachusetts has the lowest fatality rate but has the fifth lowest rate of seat belt use. Average seat belt use is 87%, and instead of 13% of fatalities being unsecured, was 49% of fatalities. The SVG shows the state name if the mouse is held over the data point. Fatality rate is per 100 million vehicle miles. Red states (New Hampshire) have no seat belt law (for adults), blue have a secondary enforcement law, and green a primary enforcement law. Data is for 2014 from US NHTSA[1][2]
