wasnot remarkable; we looked across a deep glen, hemmed inat its head by some comparatively insignificant peaks andglaciers, to the long slopes of the The La, only a fewhundred feet higher than our standpoint, though separatedfrom it by a gulf of 3000 feet. On the northern slope of the Thangchung La, where thenext traveller may bask on banks of flowers, we did notsee a single bare patch of ground. Our progress was aninterminable wade in soft troughs and down slitherysnow-banks. We chose at first a straight line for thevalley; the summer track makes, I think, a great sweepto the left. I allowed myself to be guided by what Itook for stone men put to mark the way ; small, regularpyramids some five feet high emerging at intervals fromthe white surface. On approach they proved to be plants,stalks of the giant rhubarb (Rheum nohile). I had to submit to the derision of my companions, butI may plead in excuse for my mistake that in 1888the British troops are said to have on one occasion taken
