Description
English: This kind of square votive plates showing ritual banquets, scenes of war or construction are found in important temples or shrines of Mesopotamia. They constitute a part of the door locking system: a rope or hook holding the door was attached to a wooden dowel glued to the center of the plate. The style of this plaque is typical of those discovered in Nippur, Iraq. The upper register represents a banquet scene with gods identified by their crowns of bull horns. Three seated gods hold a cup, a fourth stands between them with their hands in prayer position. In the registers below there are devotees, some of whom carry offerings such as goats or sheep.
