Text Appearing Before Image:
march was handed to the General just after thefirst brigade had passed on. When the last man had passed in review, and the lastsalute had been given and acknowledged, the order to 258 PICKETT AND HIS MEN. march was read and published. There was not a man inthe whole division who did not feel the hopelessness ofprolonging this strife, who did not know that it was thenbut a mere calculation of the few days and weeks whichwould elapse until the end. Yet, without a complaint, these brave men received marching orders. Sheridan, the untiring and unconquerable, with histen thousand cavalry, had routed Early at Waynesboroand dispersed his little band of three thousand men, andwas on his way to Richmond, it was reported, via Char-lottesville, from the North, and the command was movingup to Richmond and to the outer line of intrenchmentsnorth of the city. Pickett was to go and look after him. n o W = O 5-O = ■ oo cw > O t-H O m H d CO oo H ww H m z H o 2! > o > o
Text Appearing After Image:
CHAPTER XXX. ON TO DINWIDDIE COURT-HOUSE. It is a heartaching service to record the gatheringgloom of the last days of the Confederacy, when thenoblest blood of the Southland stained the mother clayas her sons uselessly gave up their lives, gun in hand andfaces forward, where their officers led, the officers feeling,as they gave the order, how vain, alas! it all was. To uswho lived through the darkness of those days there isyet a black s-hadow falling around us like the memoryof an awful dream. Poor Confederacy! She had nothing to oppose to theaffluence of resources possessed by the enemy save theunconquerable gallantry of her children, who foughtagainst such odds as had never before stood in the wayof freedom. When Pickett received and obeyed the telegram fromLee, ordering him to move to the right of Petersburg, heknew, and his men knew, that it was a forlorn hope. No cheek blanched, no muscle quivered, as the orderwas read. There was no weakening of their proud res-olution to fight
