La galaxia vista casi de canto, en Canes Venatici a unos 30 millones de años luz, es probablemente una espiral barrada que está deformada por las fuerzas de marea de la galaxia elíptica enana vecina NGC 4627 lo que ha provocado la aparición de regiones de nacimiento explosivo de estrellas (starburst) en las que se crean estrellas muy masivas y calientes, gigantes azules, que evolucionan "rápidamente" a supernovas cuyas explosiones diseminan materia en el halo galáctico.
