Arrival of w:Rufus Putnam and w:American pioneers to the Northwest Territory at the mouth of the Muskingum River at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, on April 7, 1788. The image view is looking south toward the mouth of the Muskingum River. Fort Harmar is in the center-right background of this image, on the west side of the mouth of the Muskingum river. These pioneers to the w:Ohio Country established w:Marietta, Ohio as the first permanent American settlement of the new w:United States in the w:Northwest Territory, and opened the westward expansion of the new country. This image is from the book by John T. Faris, On the Trail of the Pioneers, published in 1920.
