Description

Perched on the rim of the hills overlooking Yakima, Cowiche Canyon provides a peaceful getaway. The creek is always close at hand, and the lush riparian vegetation and sagebrush hillsides are home to numerous species of songbirds, while raptors and vultures circle above the cliffs. A non-motorized trail system managed by the BLM and Cowiche Canyon Conservancy allows visitors to experience amazing springtime flower displays of the sagebrush uplands. This exceptional site offers hiking, horseback riding, hunting, mountain biking and wildflower viewing!

If you’re lucky, you’ll hear a canyon wren or spot a yellow-bellied marmot or a lucia azure butterfly. This area is open to day-use only.

This area is made up of three separate parcels of public land totaling 480 acres and receives approximately 10 to 15 inches of precipitation annually. Native vegetation consists of a shrub-steppe plants with water birch, cottonwood, or willow scattered in the riparian zones of Cowiche Creek. The upland area is dominated by shallow soils and rock outcroppings with stiff sage and annual grasses dominate the vegetation.

Fees: none Season Dates: March 1 to November 30.

Directions: Cowiche Canyon is located in Yakima County approximately six miles northeast of Yakima, Washington.
