Description
English: U.S. Air Force Douglas C-124C Globemaster II aircraft (s/n 52-1060 in front) unload their cargo at Phalsbourg air base, France, as part of "Operation Stair Step" during the 1961 Berlin crisis. Federalized Air National Guard units, equipped with F/RF-84Fs and F-86Hs, moved into five airfields in northeastern France where they bolstered NATO forces from November 1961 to August 1962 before returning home. Rhein-Main AB based C-124C visited Giebelstadt AB near Würzburg (northern Bavaria) in June, 1961. In the background (photo was not taken at Giebelstadt) the little town Saint-Jean-Kourtzerode with the chirch Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste.
Deutsch: U.S. Air Force Douglas C-124C Globemaster II, s/n 52-1060 im Vordergrund, entlädt Fracht auf dem Air Force Stützpunkt Phalsbourg air base in Nordost-Frankreich, als Teil des Unternehmens Operation Stair Step infolge der Berlin-Krise (Bau der Berliner Mauer) ab dem 13. August 1961.
