Summary
[edit]DescriptionByzantine Divellion Standard.png |
English: The divellion or dibellion was a symbol of the late Byzantine Empire, the Emperor's personal banner.[1] It was carried by the skouterios ("shield-bearer"), alongside the Imperial shield, on official events.[2] Emperor Stefan Dušan of Serbia (r. 1331–55) also adopted the Imperial divellion, which was purple and had a golden cross in the center.[3] The standard was carried (either on foot or horseback) in front of the emperor to "announce" his presence. Only a specially chosen bearer (called skouterios) could carry the imperial banner, which flown as a vexiloid (suspended downward). The standard was not used when the emperor was aboard a naval ship. The shape of the divellion was a square purple field (purple was official imperial color of the emperors of East and West as well) with a golden cross in the middle of the field, covering all (4) quadrants. The Imperial standard was later adopted by emperors of the Serbs who sometimes used the more widespread title "basileus and autokrator of Serbia and Romania" ("the land of the Romans"). Some variant of the divellion was retained after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (1453 AD). |
