La construction du château remonte au 10e siècle, mais il fut remanié et presque reconstruit aux 14e et 15e siècles. L'édifice forme un triangle bordé, du côté sud, par un chemin et un ravin. Sur le côté ouest, le plus exposé, un fossé fut creusé au pied du donjon. Il était protégé par un autre, et par une grosse tour carré en avant de ce bastion. Au nord, une première cour était entourée d'un mur, de trois tours et d'un fossé. Elle renfermait un prieuré de Saint-Martin. Le château proprement dit avait une double muraille, avec tours, et une porte flanquée de deux autres tours, entre lesquelles se dressait un pont-levis. Des rampes et des escaliers d'accès conduisaient aux différents étages de cours et de bâtiments jusqu'au donjon, lequel était enveloppé presque entièrement par une troisième muraille. De plan rectangulaire, le donjon était couronné par un chemin de ronde avec mâchicoulis. Des passages souterrains communiquaient entre les bâtiments. Les troupes de Henri IV s'en emparèrent et son démantellement fut ordonné. |
