Rigging votes by Bibhas87
Another case of vote rigging was detected last month. User:Bibhas87 first created sockpuppet User:Titli89 who was adding votes by many other users to Bibhas87 images: edit 1 - edit 2. When that was challenged by other users (s)he created 3 additional sock-puppets and used them to vote. Previous case of similar behavior by MarcoC80 was discussed at Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/Archives/2018#Rigging_votes. --Jarekt (talk) 14:41, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Add 12 hours to the end of the submission period each month
Hi there. I know that the contests last for 1 or 2 months, but I am a person that usually leaves things to the last day and last minute possible, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I live in a timezone which is UTC+ some hours, so for me the contest ends before the month does. More than once I have missed the deadline because my local midnight comes after the UTC midnight. Considering that this is a friendly contest and that lots of people live in the Western hemisphere, I propose that the deadline for the contests be moved 12 hours to the future. Instead of ending at midnight UTC, it would end on midday UTC of the first day of each month. This way, it doesn't matter where you are, if it's April for you, you can submit photos for the April contest, which I think is only fair. I understand that maybe not everyone will agree, but this would make it more fun for me. Thanks! Mateussf (talk) 01:03, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- Support Several times I run into the same problem. --Jarekt (talk) 01:51, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- Comment Might be worth a try but it will need to be the new official deadline. If we kept the midnight deadline but just informally allowed an extension then some people will complain. It might be friendly, but there are also people who a fussy about rules. I do wonder, though, if we make it "Midday 1st April UTC" as a deadline, then we will just get someone posting that they also left it to the last minute, and it wasn't yet midday where they were, and could we make it Midnight 1st April UTC to give them a bit more time.... Also, if the "it is April for me" argument holds, then perhaps that should apply to the upload time at the start of the month too. Jarekt, are you able to code this small change or do you want any help? Is the challenge code unchanged? -- Colin (talk) 07:39, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- The pages themselves just say "The challenge will remain open for submissions throughout March" and than you have a countdown. If we change deadline to "Midday 1st April UTC" than only countdown will be affected and most people will not notice. And I am sure those that will notice will still miss the deadline if they wait until the last minute. --Jarekt (talk) 20:18, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- I agree it should be clear and transparent, a new official rule, not an informal extension. I think that the problem of people missing the deadline might continue, however, if a person misses the March contest deadline and it's no longer March anywhere in the world, they can't really complain. If it's still March for them, then they have some reason for that complaint. Mateussf (talk) 05:12, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

- I say let's just make the rule say that you can submit to the challenges as long as the challenge is listed on the Commons:Photo challenge page. – b_jonas 09:10, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
- I don't think we should require the challenge administrators to take down the challenge page according to a clock -- we're just volunteers with sleep, work, family and leisure competing for attention. If others started taking down the page for them, we'd run in to the problem of folk removing the challenge because it was midnight where they were, but not yet UTC, or people misunderstanding the procedure and screwing it up for others. -- Colin (talk) 14:41, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

- Ok, so if a user submits five photos and they don't remove one until the deadline, do we remove the first one submitted, or do we remove the spider? – b_jonas 20:43, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- b_jonas, I am the one often removing extra images. Sometimes I contact the photographers and ask them to remove, extras, but in most cases I do not hear back from them, than I often ise my own judgment and try to pick the best 4 images. However removing earlier ones might be another approach which would not require my judgment. --Jarekt (talk) 01:42, 28 May 2019 (UTC)

- Different topic. Since these days I'm usually the only one to update the past challenges list at Commons:Photo challenge/themes, would anyone mind if I changed the formatting of that table a bit? I'd like to change how the dates are formatted, change the headers so that the last three columns can become more narrow, change the links so they're no longer italicized, and perhaps also unify the column of theme names with that of restrictions. User:Jarekt, since you're usually counting the votes, do you happen to have the data for some or all of the last three columns handy somewhere? If not, I can collect the them from the /Voting/Result pages too, but if you already have them in a table, that would be simpler. – b_jonas 22:13, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- b_jonas no issues with changing that page around. At some point I was trying to move that page to Data:Photo challenge/statistics.tab and than somehow display the results there including a handy graph, see Commons:Photo_challenge/themes#Graph, but never got it to work. I do not have those numbers in any handy form. --Jarekt (talk) 13:51, 5 July 2019 (UTC)

- How about leaving Eye Care to be combined with Fruit, vegetabel.. next month and combining rural decay with the wrecks? Than we would have a dark September. Or of course take the horses now and be a bit less destructive. --Kritzolina (talk) 05:48, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
- Oh no, this wreckage thing came up suddenly, it hasn't had so many votes last time I looked. Now I have to look for good example images quickly. Commons:Photo challenge/2017 - October - Corroded objects has good entries, I can use a few of those. – b_jonas 11:39, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

I am leaning towards Mirrors and Weathercocks, and would vote against Fruit, which should be more of a summer theme and further from this month Harvest theme. Any other suggestions? --Jarekt (talk) 13:12, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
- Weathercocks sounds like a good choice to me - something to go outside to get the pictures along the more "indoor" challenge. --Kritzolina (talk) 19:00, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
I like Weathercocks too (though like some other commentators, I'd rather the theme were called "Weather Vanes").… but having Eye Care, Weathercocks/vanes, and Mirrors all together would mean a lot of pictures of small manufactured objects. Instead of Mirrors, what about "Long Exposure Photography"? It also has eight votes, and the same topic generated some nice pictures in April 2016.– Shillings1005 (talk) 22:59, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
- Broadening the scope to "Weather Vanes" makes sense in my opinion, some regions in the world just do not do weather cocks, but most have some kind of similar thing. --Kritzolina (talk) 14:39, 31 October 2019 (UTC)
- Not necessarily advocating for fruit, but just a note that it need not be constrained by season, since if late autumn in the northern hemisphere, it's late spring in the southern hemisphere (from which we could use more photos)...
Regardless of whether it's spring or autumn, though, I like "nature's yellows". And FWIW think it's ok that we didn't get many for eye care. Better to just close it and move on IMO. — Rhododendrites talk | 23:21, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
- Northern hemisphere has 90% humans on earth (including me) so seasonal challenges tend to follow Northern hemisphere seasons. So I see we have consensus on Weathercocks/Weather Vanes I also like "Long Exposure Photography" and "nature's yellows". --Jarekt (talk) 02:07, 31 October 2019 (UTC)
- Fair enough. Maybe one out of 10 seasonal challenges can be reversed then? :) — Rhododendrites talk | 15:31, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

I think we should do neither fruits nor nature's yellows now, because both intersect with harvest too much. I don't know if urban decay is even an option. Didn't wreckage effectively replace it? I'm fine with weathercocks, motor sports, stationery. We should probably leave mirrors for later when we can pair it with something other than these. – b_jonas 18:41, 31 October 2019 (UTC)
- I created Commons:Photo challenge/2019 - November - Weather vanes. I will create one more tomorrow. Maybe "Long Exposure Photography" or motor sports--Jarekt (talk) 04:36, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
WSC2019 warning
Hi, if you agree, as we did in 2017, I will insert a specific warning about the Wiki Science Competition challenge starting on November, 1st / November, 4th / Novemebr, 15th / December 1st so people can upload also there first. I think that in "eye care"the WSC2019 information s should be inserted right now. Please if you want to select scientific themes for December, WSC2019 will still be open in many countries. See this page (notice that WSC2019 will aslo include a "rest of the world" category)--Alexmar983 (talk) 21:58, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Eye Care
Commons:Photo challenge/2019 - October - Eye Care must be the least favorite challenge we had in the long time with only 26 photographs so far. I wander what happen, several people voting for it at the Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes/Archive#Eye_Care_and_Visual_impairment Eye_Care_and_Visual_impairment proposal page, predicted that it is going to be a "difficult challenge", I guess we should extend it for another month. --Jarekt (talk) 14:33, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
- Done I extended Eye Care challenge for another month. --Jarekt (talk) 13:13, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
That's great for extending the eye care challenge Fredyaikins (talk) 21:48, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

December Themes
Time to pick December challenges. We have the following 7-8 vote challenges:
- Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Mirrors (8 votes)
- Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Motorsports (8 votes)
- Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Fruit (7 votes)
- Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Nature's_yellows (7 votes)
- Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Stationery (7 votes)
- Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Obelisks (7 votes)
- Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Canyons_and_gorges (7 votes)
- Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Public_parks (7 votes)
I think December might not be the right time for Fruits and for Yellows, but other ones should be OK. We could pick Mirrors and Motorsports and cover indoor and outdoor photography. --Jarekt (talk) 14:13, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not knowledgeable about motorsports, but I suspect December isn't a great month for that. Compare this calendar for months and December is very weak. Since the photo challenge is supposed to inspire us to take photos, rather than dig out old ones, I think we'd be better with a different theme for December. -- Colin ( talk) 18:00, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- I guess canyons are out of the question too. Public parks might be the way to go, then. And the mirrors. – Shillings1005 (talk) 03:29, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- Public parks can look rather depressing in December, with all the bare trees and no flowers. I decided to go with Mirrors and Stationery. Both should plenty options even if the weather is bad. -- Colin (talk) 11:50, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Good choices with "mirrors" and "stationery." Not sure what the dragonfly image is there for though - maybe someone confusing "stationery" with "stationary"? :-) --passing reader

A some of them were proposed last month and postponed for various reasons (which still hold). Maybe "Rural decay" and "Fruit" (which would be mostly indoor). Other ideas? --Jarekt (talk) 23:54, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
