The Academy of fine Arts Vienna has a new Corporate Design an therefore a new Logo. I would like you to change that Logo, I cannot upload the Image because there seems to be an error!! The logo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata, but as-is it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to post COM:L compliant permission for such works on your official website or social media presence or send permission via VRT. Also, any raster image will look jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English or German Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or de:Wikipedia:Bildrechte#Bilder, deren Urheber nicht bekannt ist because we don't allow Fair Use here. I get the impression that this is a new work, so if it isn't too simple to be copyrighted, we need a licence for uploading it to Commons. On Wikipedia in German, fair use is very restricted, and I don't think it covers this case. Thus, make sure the logo can be licensed under a suitable licence, such as CC-BY-SA 4.0, and send e-mail from an official account of the organisation according to the instructions at Commons:VRT. Add {{Trademark}} to the file description page to remind reusers on the restrictions in the use of the logo. –LPfi (talk) 16:45, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Can an admin look at COM:HD#Are video game mobs copyright violation and delete the two files (File:Pillager (minecraft).png and File:Steve.png) the OP uploaded? The OP tried to nominate them for deletion, but didn't do so correctly. Since both files were uploaded earlier today, they probably can be deleted per COM:CSD#G7. Problematic photo

Dear admins, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but I can't find a better one, so please move my question to wherever you think it's appropriate.

I have an issue with this photo. Now I know of course that "This photo makes me sick" is not a valid reason for deletion. There are several other considerations however:

  • The description says the photo was taken in Abyssinia in 1936. The licensing tag says the "country of origin" is Italy. Now does Abyssinia being an Italian colony at that time make it "Italy" in a legal sense?
  • What about personality rights? This is a picture of a man exposing a woman to public humiliation. And we are supporting this public humiliation by publishing the photo and keeping it up for all eternity and on a worldwide level.

The copyright laws to apply are the ones of the country controlled the region at this time. As this is a historical photo and the people depicted are already dead there is no personality rights problem. We need such photos to illustrate the topic. Image licence review

Hi, File:Mercedes (4685956572).jpg has sat needing a licence review since May 2021 - The source file has been deleted and no back up archives exist (1 2), So given we don't know what the licence was or even if it was a CC licence in the first place should this file be deleted?,

User:Richiex and use of Wikipedia for sexual gratification

Hi, I just would like to bring this to someone's attention as I'm personally not sure as to how to interpret this situation. User:Richiex has uploaded a pretty massive collection of images and videos depicting his penis both within and outside sexual acts, i.e. masturbating. Some of these images (Male urethral opening location.JPG, or A frenulum of human penis.jpg) have some encyclopedic value, however, the vast majority of these images are unused and it seems a great many of them have already been deleted. Despite the obvious COM:PENIS and COM:PORN issues, on the blog linked in his user page, he describes himself as an exhibitionist who uploads videos of himself to achieve sexual gratification:

A big bulge or a boner in the pants in a public place. Innocently one testicle out of the leg of the shorts on the beach. Having a cameltoe or a moose knuckle. Masturbating in the woods with a tiny risk that someone might see it from the distance (this has happened). I readily talk about my sexuality, ejaculations and erections etc. And the biggest thing: uploading pics and vids to the internet.

To what extent is this behavior allowed, even for encyclopedic content?

Not calling for anything to be done -- just wondering if there's any precedence for this.

(Edit conflict) It is generally allowed to describe oneself one one's user page in a way relevant to one's uploads, and link to one's web pages elsewhere. If one uploads this kind of images, I assume a link to that blog is relevant.
For COM:PENIS etc., the issue is that we don't need another redundant low-quality image. If the image quality is high, I think there is no problem with redundancy, and if it is reasonable, images which are significantly different from those we have should likewise be kept. That they are unused is no problem, only a small percentage of our images are used on Wikimedia projects, and we cannot foresee which images next will be chosen for use somewhere.
It might of course be that their own exhibitionist interest gets them not to think too much about our scope when uploading images. That is a problem, and there might be a need to delete some of his uploads, but the same problem is there with many of our contributors, foremost uploading for their own gain (think VRT images from political actors and businesses). If there are valuable images among his contributions, I think we should give him quite much leeway.

Hi, Reverts are still going on back and forth on this file. I have proposed a compromise and to reach a consensus through an intermediary file (e.g. File:International reactions to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine - testing.svg), but it doesn't work. New accounts appear out of nowhere and revert to an older version, so it is not technically an editwar. See the history and the talk page. Any idea what to do now? Request to edit protected page

DR closed by a subsequently globally banned admin

Can some administrators take a look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:ARHQ.jpg and assess whether the file should’ve been deleted? I’m asking about this because the outcome of en:Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2022 May 1#File:Ngo Quang Truong ARHQ.jpg might depend upon whether the Commons file was correctly deleted since the local English Wikipedia file is a crop of the Commons file. — Marchjuly (talk) 01:54, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

INC had thousands of actions across our site, the vast majority of which were legitimate. So I think the ban status is a bit of a red herring.
In this case, the image was uploaded to English Wikipedia with a copyright tag but no source. The uploader removed nsd tags three times without ever providing a source (w:Special:Undelete/File:ARHQ.jpg). It was then transferred to Commons before it was deleted on Commons for missing a source.

Just for reference, I didn’t mean to imply that the file should be restored just because the closing admin was subsequently banned; so, my apologies to INC and others if that’s how it came across. I only meant that trying to seek clarification from INC was impossible given the ban. @Taivo: Perhaps what I posted was confusing. I wasn't asking that Commons administrator delete the Wikipedia file; I know that can't be done. inappropriate username

The account GayNibbaFromOuterSpace (talk · contribs) should be blocked IMO, based on Commons:Username policy, as it's obviously meant as an attack. So far their only upload File:A member of the Kool Kids Klub.webp (deleted as copyvio) carried the description "A member of the gay niggas from the outer space chasing a member of the KKK". Request for page protection

I'm requesting deletion for the "Cingnian Night Market" category due to it was never really used (empty page). Unexpectedly, someone would create it over and over again. I don't know what is the point of creating a category that is always just a empty page. Es wäre schön, wenn alle Werke von staatlichen Institutionen in Deutschland automatisch gemeinfrei wären. Leider ist das aber nicht der Fall. Details unter Commons:Urheberrechtsregeln nach Gebiet/Deutschland. Letztlich akzeptieren wir nur staatliche Werke nach § 5 Abs. 1 UrhG als gemeinfrei, also Gesetze, Verordnungen, amtliche Erlasse und Bekanntmachungen sowie Entscheidungen und amtlich verfaßte Leitsätze zu Entscheidungen. Can an admin take a look at Special:Contributions/구순돌? Most of them appear to be copyvios and many are cross-Wiki uploads of non-free files found on English Wikipedia. do not delete my own artworks please. I am illustrator, wikipedia editor on South Korea. I made my own artworks and upload some of them on wikimedia commons. Translation of the preload tweet from the Main page in Russian

The buttons «Твит» below POTD and MOTD was renamed to «Твитнуть» making it as a somehow call-to-action. But the texts with the links to POTD/MOTD that are being preloaded in Twitter are still in English. I suggested some translations on this talk page and bring it here for a broad discussion. Would you mind to vote for one of the suggested variants or make your own here for us to reach an agreement on the final translation to put into the code?

Strange overlapping/sock behaviour

Three users above have all been uploading images in the same style today with most of the filenames being something like "Rose 58.jpg". Some of the images are direct duplicates of each other's photos, with slightly different names. Some of them are different photos of the same object, with the same timestamp watermark taken seconds apart (File:Rangoli 6.jpg and File:Kolam in grains 2.jpg). The agreement you have with the writer is between the two of you; it doesn't extend to others. For example, if you ask the writer something like "Can I upload your work to use on my website?" and they say "Yes", then they are just giving you permission to use the work on your website. They aren't giving you permission to use the work on any other websites, and they aren't giving anyone else permission to use the work on their websites. What you will need to do is get the writer to give their COM:CONSENT to basically allow anyone anywhere in the world to download the writer's work and reuse it at any time in pretty much any way they like. It's not sufficient for Commons purposes for the writer to give their consent to only you; they need to also be willing to give the same consent to everyone else. If the writer is willing to do this, then great. Just ask them to email their consent to Wikimedia VRT as explained here for verification purposes. Another option would be for the writer to post the content in question on one of their official websites and clearly state that they're giving their consent. Source, author, license are now corrected.

The commentary associated to the first upload in the history of those 8 files reads now:

Restore two files that were deleted without discussion and without apparent reason

Hello, the Egyptian governmental "Channel One", is a channel that meets the requirements of fame and good reputation worldwide. It has published a video clip on its official YouTube channel here, and it is responsible for the content published on its channel, and other user claims that "Channel One" does not own the content published on its channel. Hi Masry1973. Many YouTube channels of media organizations do generate 100% original content and release such content under a "free" license that Commons accepts. Sometimes, though, such channels do included elements (e.g. copyrighted content) created by others as part of their reports. The reports are derivative works in that they themsleves are eligible for their own separate copyright protection as a whole, but that the footage or photos used in the report still retain their individual copyrights separate from the final work. There could be lots of reasons why a third-party copyright holder might not report the media organization using their work to YouTube. First, they might've given the media organization permission to use their work in its report. The media organization could also be using the content under a claim of en:fair use or en:fair dealing. Of course, it's also possible that the third-party copyright holder has no idea the media organization is using their content. Any agreement that might exist between the media organization and the third-party copyright holder is between those two parties and doesn't extend to Commons or anyone else. The CC license the media organization releases it original YouTube content under is for the content as a whole. As soon as you start extracting and uploading parts of that content, you're no longer dealing with the copyright status of the video as a whole but rather the copyright status of the individual element you've uploaded. If that element isn't 100% original content generated by the media organization, then I don't believe the copyright status of the video as a whole is as relevant as the copyright status of the individual element. Since Commons doesn't accept fair use content of any type, it needs to be as clear as possible about the COM:CONSENT of the copyright holder of the individual element in question per COM:PCP. So, if you extracted an element created by a third-party being used in media organizations report and tried to upload that to Commons, it might be seen as something not being allowed without the consent of the person who took the photo even if it was being used in a report that as a whole is licensed OK for Commons. I'm not a Commons administrator and this is just my non-expert guess as to why File:Funeral of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh.png might've have been deleted. The administrator who actually deleted file is علاء. Perhaps by asking them about this, they will be better able to clarify why the file was deleted. Wow, thank you!!! I spent all afternoon yesterday painstakingly adding categories one by one to the hundreds of files uploaded by @Ser Amantio di Nicolao: . I had to find the files in Ser Amantio di Nicolao's upload history, then right-click each file, open it in a new browser tab, select edit, copy and paste the category wikitext, save the edit, close the browser tab, and then open the next file in a new browser tab. That might only take a few seconds per file, but it is exhaustingly repetitive and ends up being hours of work for many hundreds of images. I was just able to do in a few minutes using VisualFileChange what would have taken another several hours to accomplish by manually editing each file one by one. I think VisualFileChange might be the solution I need to getting the categories and attribution corrected, but there is still the separate issue that the wikipages on Commons are missing the original file names. I don't think there is any automated tool for MediaWiki that can extract the original file name from Flickr if it was removed when imported to Commons. This is a serious problem because if an image is deleted and re-uploaded on Flickr, or if I change image hosting from Flickr Pro (paid hosting) back to Piwigo (free hosting), there is no way to find the original image based on the incomplete attribution provided on Wikimedia Commons. For example if someone wanted to request the lossless RAW/CR2/TIF/PNG version of a lossy JPG image. Most astrophotography (such as for an eclipse or transit) is done by interval photography, meaning that there are a large number of images that are visually similar and difficult to identify individually without knowing the specific file name (for a Canon camera, you need to know both the album name and the image number to find a specific image, since the image numbers cycle for every 10,000 photos). Other than the one image on English Wikipedia for the Lunar eclipse, none of these images are embedded in any other Wikimedia projects, so I still think the best option is to delete all of the images in the category "photos by Nicole Sharp" and then re-upload them using the file names of either "AlbumName - OriginalFileName" or "OriginalFileName (FlickrID)". Alternatively, someone might be able to write a script that can read the Flickr image title from the Flickr URL, and then paste it into the image description on Wikimedia Commons. The files don't actually have to be renamed — they just need the original file name and Flickr album name somewhere in the description so that the original file can be found again if the source URL becomes invalid. I do not have the ability to either mass-delete or mass-upload images, so both of these tasks will need to be done by an admin. I have already requested this several times with no results though so not sure if anyone on Commons is willing to delete and then re-upload, or give me the privileges needed to complete the task myself. Unable to edit RfD page from February

Hi,

I'd like to edit my previous RfD from February by the edit button on the top of the page, but Commons does not let me switch to edit mode. Also manually changing the URL to edit mode does not work. The page does simply not reload. The RfD is also not visible on Commons:Deletion requests/2022/02 and visible part of the page is quite short, which makes me wonder if this is just me or maybe something happened, like an unclosed tag in one of the other deletion requests included in the page? Loophole: Blocked users able to upload files through FileImporter

Thanks to Smooth O for reporting this at VP/T: There's a blocked user uploading files to commons by uploading to another project first and then using FileImporter to import them here. Hellou. I am an administrator on the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia project and we have a policy to not host PD images on the project. Now, I did not know that Vrtleska25 had been blocked on Commons, which is why I uploaded several of his photographs I deemed appropriate. These files meet Commons' standards, as far as I know, and they shouldn't be problematic per se. Now, if it is an issue that they are Vrtleska's photos, then, well, I shall stop uploading them if it is an issue, but since the images truly are both useful and in accordance with Commons' terms, I don't see why they should not be uploaded here. The user is blocked because too many unfree files were uploaded. I do not think it is a problem that the files are moved to Commons if local admins check the files before they are moved.

An IP user, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/220.246.171.244 made something like 50 separate deletion requests for images from OneNews Malaysia, a Malaysian television station, on the grounds that its YouTube channel has been blocked. They're all in Commons:Deletion requests/2022/05/23. On 19 May, English Wikipedia User:Clafuria uploaded four files for use on an English Wikipedia article, Pennsylvania Western University (The files: File:PennWest Lockup California FINAL SM.svg, File:PennWest Lockup Clarion FINAL SM.svg, File:PennWest Lockup Edinboro FINAL SM.svg, File:PennWest Lockup Global Online FINAL SM.svg). I received a file deletion notice on 22 May, as these files were used to replace three files I uploaded under a fair use of a copyrighted logo. When I looked at the files that were uploaded, I noticed all four were uploaded under 'Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International' with the source being "Own work". I was familiar with the university, and knew the logos were in fact the work of the university, so I left a message on their talk page on the English Wikipedia, on 22 May, directly challenging the license choice and claim of own work.

On May 23, User:Clafuria responded with the following:

That's a fairly obvious conflict of interest, and they made no mention of the affiliation until that point. I responded on 24 May, by informing them of Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy, and then left links to both the main article on it and the 'plain and simple' guide. I then pointed out the license choice seemed ill-advised from their standpoint, for an organizations logos, breaking down what CC BY SA 4.0 license allows people to do, linking to the Creative Commons page on that license and also Commons:Licensing, as an effort to make sure they understood what that license does.

As of today, May 26, I haven't heard anything and there's been no further edits of any kind by the account, per the User contributions list. I'm looking for some advice as to how the handle the situation.

Normally I'd propose deletion over an incorrect license, but I think they're telling the truth about being with PennWest University marketing. Vector forms of that logo aren't floating around, as that branding isn't scheduled to start use for another month and a half. I only had the logos I uploaded due to a right to know request I'd filed a few months earlier, and mine didn't have the Service Mark attached as they were from a presentation to select their new logo. Additionally the only real non-logo edit they did really reads like something a marketing person would write. If staff of the university upload their logo, I don't view it as our job to decide they used the wrong license for their materials. I've pointed out that it seems like a odd choice and they've made no efforts to change it, contact me or anyone else for further information or request the files be deleted. (I brought this to the Commons, as the files were uploaded/moved to here, so it seemed more in the Commons wheelhouse. Help requested with URAA nominations

Dear collegues, as an admin I am working on old deletion requests. I think it is a good thing to remove copyright violations from Commons and I want to protect authors as well as reusers. However, as an art lover I am in personal trouble with some URAA requests. For instance, a painting which is in PD in the whole of Europe, must apparently be deleted due to the URAA restoration. This has been discussed many times, and I do not want to discuss the principles again. I need help however with such deletion requests, currently with File:1937 Leblan Landschaft anagoria.JPG. With the help of Google and some browsing I found this statement of the WMF: So WMF does not see a reason to delete content simply because of general concern about the URAA. Basically, you will find contradictory information. While the WMF seems not happy about the URAA still protecting works in the US that are free in their country of origin and most other states, they apparently feel (understandably) that they have to comply with US law, so you'll find only carefully worded statements from them. They'll leave the actual decisions whether to delete or not to the Commons community however and will only step in and delete something themselves by an Office Action if forced to do so by an official legal request. That brings us to the Commons community, where many admins, especially those from Europe, don't want to delete European works that are free in Europe but still protected in the US. Which lead to the statement that URAA should not be the sole reason for deletion, while our official guidelines state that files must comply with US law. That's the status quo, and apparently (almost) nobody is interested in changing it (let sleeping dogs lie and so on), which I found out a couple of years ago when I tried to resolve the situation. --Rosenzweig τ 16:09, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
@Rosenzweig: A similar situation exists with illegal graffiti. Officially, per COM:PCP, non-free graffiti is not allowed without permission of the artist. English language books will be especially difficult to assess, because perhaps available/published in US. I can buy very cheap books from painters from my country like Piet Mondriaan and the lesser known Leo Gestel (born in the town where I happen to live), because the copyright is expired. It would feel strange to delete these images from Commons. No heirs - all far above 70 years of age by now - would ever think of getting more money from royalties. They have had enough imho. No heirs would ever think of getting more money from royalties? There are several examples of suits about European works in the US; for example, the Arthur Conan Doyle estate in Klinger v. Conan Doyle Estate or their suit against Netflix were after all of ACD's works were PD in the UK. Likewise, the Anne Frank estate sent Wikimedia a URAA notice when the work left copyright in Europe and the Dutch Wikisource started to transcribe it. I'm quite sure that whoever owns the Orwell estate would sue over 1984 in a heartbeat. I'm not so sure that Piet Mondriaan wouldn't sue us, but Leo Gestel probably wouldn't. Then again, I'm pretty sure I could upload photos of local murals painted in the 90s by an artist who died in 2000, and WMF wouldn't hear a word from the artist's estate. "Won't sue us" has never been a winning argument at Wikimedia.
I understand; many of the works that make up the shared Anglo-American culture are limited not because they are illegal for me or the WMF to use, but because they're copyrighted in Europe. But I think the user has improved, they interacted constructively with me at ANU and they haven't uploaded any more copyvios since then. I had cautioned them about their inappropriate comments and had informed them about COM:CIVIL. So IMHO no action is required right now, after all blocks are preventative not punitive. Phreneticc (talk · contribs) is continuing the campaign. I see no merit in these edits because they are making changes without correcting or improving the image. See COM:OVERWRITE. The SVG edits are removing spaces and metadata. The Help:SVG guidelines discourage edits without a visual change ("If a file renders correctly it is generally undesired to reupload it without visible changes."). I do not know what the JPEG edits are doing. Image loss? Does EXIF survive? The user should stop "reducing the weight" of files. A mass revert seems appropriate. Glrx (talk) 17:08, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

Captchas during deletion process

Hello admins, I have a question about the captchas I encounter when starting a deletion process for a file, as I did this morning. The nomination apparently has to be published in four different places, so I get four captchas I have to enter correctly. I have no problem with that, but what I do find a bit strange is that the tone of these captchas gets more aggressive each time, basically telling me "Will you now PLEASE enter the correct captcha this time? Or cut it out!", obviously implying that I am vandalizing in some way.

As long as it's only that, I can laugh at it, but this may have caused some additional issues on the German Wikipedia for me. For those of you who read German, you can read the discussion here. Apparently there is some sort of "limiter" that believes I have made 8 edits within one minute or 15 wrong captcha entries within one minute. I have no idea how I would even go about making that many edits in one minute. And I have certainly never made more than a maximum of ONE wrong captcha entry.

My assumption is that something is wrong with the settings of this limiter. Anyone have an idea what might be going on? Thanks, --91.34.47.35 11:22, 3 June 2022 (UTC)

Gani Gashi once again

A gallery Gani Gashi has been recreated. That's no problem, but: I know that someone will use the flyflap again saying "LTA" and m:SRG and so on. The problem is: Gani Gashi is (not only in my opinion) indeed a notable painter who has pages on sq:wp (since 2019), pl:wp (both of which should be extended) and also on wikidata. Unfortunately there have been created that many accounts during the past years for to load up images, that it of course fits 'abusing multiple accounts'. Delay on deleting images

I have been notified that the images I have uploaded to commons are not able to be used currently. I am contacting the author about using the images but I believe they will be alright with the current usage of the images. I was wondering if you could give me a week before you delete the images so I can sort the issue out with the author? The author seems alright with the public using the images and I don't think they would mind if Wikimedia keeps the images on the site until the issue is resolved. Thanks!

I don't think you understand how copyright works. "I don't think they would mind" is not a carte blanche to uploading their work before getting permission. Categorization of Puerto Rico

Hello, User:The Eloquent Peasant, User:Mercy11 and I have been discussing whether categories for Puerto Rico should go under "...of/in the United States" or "...by Country." First, my apologies if this is not the correct place to put this question. Because it is a territory and not a state, one argument is that it is not really in the US and should go under the country cats. The other argument, however, is that being a territory is sufficiently a part of a country and that the US categories are more accurate. @AnandaBliss: I agree with the second argument, but for categorization purposes could we insert a "US territories" set of cats and put each territory set under it? There are many territories in the US that are not yet states because they have not yet qualified, but they are still in the US, and their residents are still forced to pay US income taxes, but benefit from US laws, defenses, and infrastructure. Part of qualification is political due to the US bipartisan political system, such that additions must be balanced between the parties so as not to upset the balances of power in the US House of Congress and the US Senate (combined as the US Congress; roughly equivalent to houses of commons and houses of lords in other countries' parliamentary systems). It's not mutually exclusive: PR can show up as an insular area / territory (not state) of the U.S. AND also under the Mountains by country. AnandaBliss does not want PR to ever show up as a country in Commons, claiming it causes massive confusion. That is the issue. The definition of country. P.R. is not a sovereign state but it is a country. It is not a state. There are lots of ways to show it correctly however, listed after Pennsylvania in the P section of United States is not correct and is how AnandaBliss has gone and done it with reverting how the categories were set up. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 15:40, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
It's not a state, but for our purposes it's closer to being a state than a country. We can easily and correctly interpret our container categories to include "states and territories of the USA" (look at Category:Mayors of Washington, D.C.), but we can't do that by claiming them to be countries. Very important point I want to make is re: our understanding of "country" on Commons. Someone mentioned that for the purposes of Wiki Commons, "country" means sovereign state (i.e. US) but that is not so. If we look at this category (category:Reefs by country) and many other categories: we can see that American Samoa (which is a US Territory) and Taiwan are listed under countries. So country in Commons does not necesarily mean Sovereign State, and this is why I and others have added P.R. as a country. Same type of situation. See Category:Reefs_by_country . I listed the categories that we should look at on my talk page and look forward to working through this with AnandaBliss and others. Modification of Template:PD-VenezuelaGov

Hello, I want to talk to you about the modification of the template Template:PD-VenezuelaGov that mentions the public domain license for Venezuela.

Recently in 2012, the government decreed a law that releases to the public domain all the graphic material that is made by any of the government institutions.

The law in question is the Ley Orgánica del Trabajo, los Trabajadores y las Trabajadoras (Labor Law in English), decreed in May 7, 2012. In which article no. 325 decrees (in Spanish):

La producción intelectual generada bajo relación de trabajo en el sector público, o financiada a través de fondos públicos que origine derechos de propiedad intelectual, se considerará del dominio público, manteniéndose los derechos al reconocimiento público del autor o autora.

Translated into English would be:

Fixing licensing errors during deletion debate

  • At Commons:Deletion requests/File:Historical people of Gelon.jpg I changed the license to the appropriate license for the country of origin for the image, my edit was reversed with the comment: "If you think a license is incorrect, you can discuss it at the DR but don't change licenses in the middle of a DR. That is deceptive and manipulative for the DR discussion!" I believe we should be correcting deficiencies as quickly as possible. What is our exact rule, can we make corrections to defective licensing information during the deletion debate? Waiting for the deletion debate to end can take up to a year, and I doubt anyone would even remember a year later to check back at a discussion to then make changes, and under the old license it would be deleted. So, who is correct? This is the deletion queue from January of this year.   • Part of the problem is that when you scan or even crop an original photo, you create a derivative copy, Commons ask for the date and the name of the creator. New uploaders choose info on the new derivative copy by default, instead of information on the original image.   • Ignoring the drama that is created by such antics, I do not see what is gained by changing the license on the page while a deletion discussion is ongoing. The administrator is likely to read the discussion and not do a separate history search on the page to see that you've changed the page to your preference. I'm certain a follow-up complaint that the page was deleted even though you changed the page will result in more annoyance at your antics than anything productive. If you do change the page, then remark on that in the discussion and I would suggest pinging the people who discussed it before. However, I see nothing that was gained by changing it in this particular circumstance since no one on the page was made aware of the changes and the same issue was being discussed at the page. Either, it is something that is important and new so everyone who is discussing it needs to be know about it and should re-evaluate their opinion or it is something minor that should have no effect on the discussion. Modification of Template:Not-PD-US-URAA to reflect common practice

In line with a recent discussion I want to improve clarity for admins and uploaders by modifying Template:Not-PD-US-URAA remove the first four sentences of the second section (referencing non-acceptance, non-upload, ongoing review, and deletion of material under copyright in the US) and remove the second section of its template documentation. This was last discussed on Template talk:Not-PD-US-URAA in 2017 but based on the elapsed time and the recent discussion it's time to act.

It would be consistent to modify Commons:URAA-restored copyrights to remove mention of the precautionary principle because it is not our common practice.

Putting this here and not Commons:Village pump/Copyright because the template is widely used and I would like some feedback in case other changes to the template should be performed which I missed, thanks. Hekerui (talk) 21:04, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

While moving it, it's logical to give it a more specific name (criterion no. 2) i.e., the name of the house itself, not the name of the street neighborhood.     1. Selamsiz is the name of a region, not the building.
    2. Why do we choose inaccurate information while there is a exact information? "Selamsız house" looks like a name of the building. It is not even a house, it is kosk.
    3. If the building had no name, we could say "A house in Selamsiz". But it has name.
    4. Does owning the image allow owner's to put a misleading title?

    I just follow the same guideline: "In general, Commons aims to provide stable filenames as there might be external file clients and file moving involves significant human and computing resources". I have seen my photos used on external resources (and not just in my blog, though I am probably the most frequent user of my own photos), I do not have a list of external usage but my photos are used in Britannica, USA Today, and the Forbes, for example. And I know that often moving a photo leads to these external sites (obviously, not those I mentioned, but lower tiers) being damaged.This is why I only move my photos when it is absolutely necessary, fully aligned with the guideline. Concerning the easiness of the search, this what we have Structured Commons (and, to a lesser extent, the categories) for. All files I have ever uploaded here have appropriate categories, and all in the last couple of years have appropriate Wikidata tags. Ymblanter (talk) 20:50, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

Help with Flickr images needing human review

Right now we have over 7,000 Flickr images needing human review, which is quite a backlog. Only administrators and license reviews can approve images, so any help would be appreciated. Over 5,000 of these are from the the FaceMePLS Flickr account, uploaded by User:1VeertjeBot. These images are currently under All Rights Reserved, but claim to previously be under cc-by-2.0, with archived links provided to prove it. I already wrote that I think it is not correct to link the Flickr page with the non free license because that is not the source for the CC-BY license photo. The source for the these photos with a CC-BY license is the archive only. GPSLeo is wrong about uploading images after a license is changed being an issue. A CreativeCommons license is perpetual. This is very explicitly stated in the license agreement. That the Flickr interface allows the user to change the license does not make it less valid. I've amended the file description with links to Archive.org pages from before this year to make it easier to verify that they indeed had CC-BY licenses. Unfortunately only 3/4 of these files were archived before the license change. I'm 100% sure they had this because I downloaded the metadata to these files all the way back in 2015. At the time I didn't have the technical skills to complete the process of downloading, uploading and adding metadata. This is an account that I've been following for about a decade now, always transferring appropriate images whenever there were new uploads. There's a lot of circumstantial evidence. For one: I've been a reliable contributor to Wikimedia Commons for many many years now, so I think I deserve some credit for that. I can also point to examples like File:'Birgittinessen klooster' Maasstraat Weert (7053214401).jpg and File:'Birgittinessen klooster' Maasstraat Weert (7053214205).jpg where only one has an archive link, but since they're the same subject and upload date there really shouldn't be even a shadow of doubt that what I say is true: that all the files in this set have a CC-BY license. Just to clarify. The intent of the bot task was to flag files that have lost EXIF data as they were processed through WhatsApp at some point. I've made WhatsApp more for tracking, so it's technically not a clean-up page. Ultimately, a lot of files in there would qualify for DR's so I can see why it's perceived as such. Mass moving files to a POV title

"War of Independence"?

Some months ago, hundreds of files from Israeli archives were uploaded under the title of "War of Independence". This is a title which is not accepted on any wiki, where it is called the wikidata:Category:1948 Arab–Israeli War.

It is also a title extremely offensive to the 3/4 million Palestinian refugees from the war, and their descendants. The Palestinians usually call this war "Nakba", (=catastrophe).

I have changed the file-names from "War of Independence" to "1948 Arab–Israeli War".

The picture above is of the Palestinian prisoners, in "holding bins", pictured at Ramle in July-48, just before their expulsion. I would presume that Israeli "war of indepence" (as it is presently called) would be extremely insulting to the people pictured, and their descendants. As i said in User_talk:Huldra#Moves_outside_of_any_rules there is no reason to move thousands of filenames to a suposed NPOV when the mover has a clear pro-palestinian POV (and that was, is and will fine in any other contest) under the disguise of a NPOV justification for every move, when his reasons are simply for a specific POV.
Also, when some says that "Israel’s War of Independence" = "Palestinian Nakbah", but says that he will not move the filenames with "Nakbah", when under his own criteria the term Nakbah is a specific POV, we can see that there are to weights.

True, but still the only issue here is the year of this war and if we follow the guidelines then i agree with Huldra's move, the related article on the Hebrew wikipedia is very much biased so we follow the one on the English wikipedia cause anyone that has been on these wiki for a while knows that regional language wikis have their own biases and as such because we have a valid article on this on the English Wikipedia and the images here in commons are also in that very same category, i don't see the issue except for maybe ending each Image with the given filename number which i believe Huldar did before Tm reverted him .. We categorise images on commons in relations to the event its related to and the event was the 1948 war, every other language wiki has categorised it as such as well bar the hebrew wiki who chose to not even link their related article on this to the relevant wikidata on this, so if there is a bias here, its not from the page moves made by Huldar... Category:2014 Nakba Day, Ramallah is a (sub)subcat of Category:Nakba Day. Nakba Day is 15 May every year, a day officially commemorated since the 1990s. (see en:Nakba Day, or any of the ~ 20 different wiki-articles about it: wikidata:Q263078). It would be totally absurd to move Category:2014 Nakba Day, Ramallah to Category:2014 Israeli-Arab war day, Ramallah! (Seriously, what 2014 Israeli-Arab war??)

COM:FRC p. 5 "...To change a filename that would be a violation of Commons’ policies and guidelines if it appeared elsewhere on the project as text.." What's highly offensive it that a sole user is aspiring to tell Israelis what to name their files. We call this war the War of Independence. That is a fact, and it is only natural that we be allowed to name our files accordingly. Problem admin breaking template, and abusing admin tools again

I have for a long time been editing sorting out London based categories and have found "Template:London subdivisions categories" very useful for this task. Until today, now it has been altered so that now in most cases it no longer works. By Blackcat an admin with past form of Abusing admin tools, rude and uncouth editing, bad faith actions and edit Waring. He occasionally has edited London Categories with a bizarre war against the word Stadium with his behavior descending to edit wars and Admin tool abuse, but has little interest in the subject of London. His edits have not only broke the navigational template but are also unwelcome to the major user of it. I reverted his edit to the previous one that worked. Since then he has protected the template claiming it is to "prevent vandalism" this is clearly a lie as I only edited the template once and fixing it is not vandalism. This is another occasion of this user abusing his admin tools if he disagrees with me he should discuss not strong arm his agenda. Something else this admin has a history of doing. In his edit summery he ties to justify his actions as "Widely used template", I am by far the major user of this template and by far the major user of the category London and it's subcats, the template has been wrecked by someone with little to no previous interest in London. There was nothing wrong with the Template and no need for any modifications. Now it fails to work. Please can anyone looking into this treat this issue fairly and look into repairing the template Oxyman (talk) 21:09, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

@Ricky81682: first of all, that template shouldn't be into the said categories. It is meant for the categories named after the boroughs of London. That a part, to answer to your question, no, it was not a reversion. The template is widely used and I protected it. It has been uniformed to the navigation templates used for the same categories (see for example template:Counties of England.) Unfortunately the old code didn't fit because it's not able to manage the cases in which there is a suffix (not something of BOROUGH but also something of BOROUGH by SOMETHING. Oxyman haa a long story of abusing the tool of A/U unfortunately, one year ago he even opened a discussion for a legitimate edit that I never reverted . If he had asked for explanations I would have given them. If the problem is the protection we can discuss, but editing a wrong template into its correct form is not a matter of problem administrator. -- Blackcat 23:09, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
The template was added to the Fire stations one in November 2013 so I don't see how you can decide that it shouldn't have been there when it's been there for over eight years in the first place. It seems like you have decided that you own this template and you want it structured how you want and just removing it after destroying it seems pretty childish to me. I don't care about Oxyman's antics so much as the amount of work you are creating for others. What is wrong with creating another template? If you want to own the main template, fine, but then create a new template for the pages that have used this template for years and do that, not destroy it, put it where you want and then remove it so someone else will now have to waste time and energy following you around to see where you've removed this template from? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 23:16, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
Removing a template with the edit summary 'fix' is not actually productive here. If you want the template deleted, then argue for its deletion. It's Oxyman that is probably too impatient, but when I change a template I take also the responsibility of fixing the consequence. As for the question of the template, it simply must not be there. What has to do a template: "boroughs of london" in a category "Snow in London?". It's a navigational template through the items of a same class. It's the reason itself of a template. A talk page comment on the template would have solved a lot of this. Not protecting it with your new format would have also helped not stir up drama. No one can read your mind and know whether or not you were going to fix this, especially when you choose to use cryptic edit summaries like "fix" to lock the template, edit the template and I don't know which are ones that are actual fixes by removing it in your mind rather than trying to guess if your plan was just to remove it everywhere. I agree that it's probably not appropriate at the Snow one in retrospect but I have no idea what your plan is here. If you think it's not necessary there, use a different edit summary so people know what you are doing. Dispute regarding file: Flag of Saudi Arabia.svg

  • There is a user named "Aziz bm" that is reverting 1 of 2 versions of the current Saudi Arabian flag. The version I am referring to [1] is seen in all governmental settings and used in public and daily life in Saudi Arabia. The main point I am trying to convey is that the user is creating a duplicate file by changing the version of the 1st version of the flag, which is not acceptable. I do not want to continue this edit war with this individual with the fear that nothing constructive will occur, so I came here to report this problem.
  • Both versions have a minor text difference.
  • Vexilla Mundi's flag construction sheet is used to show the Saudi Arabian flag, and it uses the version I am arguing for.
  • A user by the name of "Zyido" perfectly describes this issue in a discussion area on File talk:Flag of Saudi Arabia.svg named "Correct Version of the Flag", and he recommended making, "both flags to appear on the Wikipedia page as alternatives/variants in some way once we decide which one is the "main" one.", which I totally agree with.

Uploading a new version to get around a svg bug

Hi all, the File:Flag of Arkansas.svg is not rendering correctly due to phab:T276684. I raised the issue at en:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Flag of Arkansas.svg rendering inappropriately, and User:Anomie has fixed the issue and uploaded a working replacement svg at testwiki:File:Flag of Arkansas fixed.svg. I request an administrator to upload that file in place of current File:Flag of Arkansas.svg to fix the rendering issues on hundreds of pages using that image. Hello, my name is Nikki Jean, I'm a songwriter. This page Category:Nikki Jean contains two pictures of someone who is not me. These pictures have been misattributed to the page representing my career since January (I believe) I've contacted the wikipedia VRT to verify my identification. I am the rights holder of the picture being used on the page now. Can this page be deleted, or there be some clarification that this person is a different Nikki Jean, or can the person who posted these images be prevented from misattributing pictures to me again? Hi, I'm the IP user from Wikipedia who pointed Ms. Jean at the problematic category page here.
This strange situation piqued my interest so I did some digging; those two photos were both independently taken by separate uploaders from the same flckr album "Nikki Jean At Chocolate Bar", and probably depict some other person (perhaps a friend of the photographer) who was also there. Honest mistake, but since they do not in fact depict Nikki Jean, they are likely to be out of scope and should probably be considered for deletion? Not completely sure about the policies here. I should also mention that one of them is still being incorrectly used on Spanish, Korean and Romanian Wikipedias.
@NikkiJean92 can you take a look at the album I linked and confirm if that's you performing on the keyboard in the later photos? User:Corachow, who does impressive work on ballet articles on the EN wikipedia, asked me about the Flickr images https://www.flickr.com/photos/premsaliceu/25464967025/ and https://www.flickr.com/photos/premsaliceu/25438811316/. They're professional quality photographs of ballet dancers, but posted from the Flickr account for Premsa Liceu, which is the press office of the Liceu, a Barcelona opera house, 170 years old, and in every way a respectable organization, which I was willing to believe would own the rights to these photos. However she points out that at least this first one was probably (I can't see it, I'm not an admin, just a Commons:License reviewer, but from the file name it seems very likely to have been this first one) deleted by Commons admin User:Jcb with the comment Missing license as of 5 November 2016. They are licensed Public Domain Mark now. Were they not licensed that way in 2016, or are there some other issues that we aren't seeing? Are they all right for upload now? I asked Jcb a few days ago, but he hasn't answered, and since he's only edited twice in 2022, and only 10 times in the 2 years before that, it's likely he won't answer, so we're asking the Commons admin body at large. Currently, we need a good reason for each file to be PD. The lack of any free or PD license on this page does not give me any confidence that the Liceu intended to make its photos PD. @Bestbiowriter: if the copyright holder releases them under a free license, they must send notice for each to the VRT. If they only release them for use on Wikipedia sites, they are not permitted on Commons (as it is not a fully free license) and must be uploaded locally on each wiki the image(s) will be used on. Rosetta NAVCAM duplicates

Hi, I noticed the import of a large quantity of ROSETTA NAVCAM images (example: File:Comet 67P on 20 October (A) - NAVCAM (15615428085).jpg. These images have been imported, categorized and reused on Commons for a long time (for the given example, File:Comet 67P on 20 October 2014 NavCam A.jpg has been imported in 2014). I tagged a dozen of them as duplicates, but there are too many of them to flag them individually, it would take me several days. Ping @Astromessier. I merged the Rosetta-related files directly identified as duplicates by the software; though the non-Rosetta uploads likely need investigation too. Note that the files imported, categorized and reused on Commons for a long time were the older ones, to which the (unused) duplicates were redirected. I'm now trying to go through the remaining Rosetta files by searching for other files described as taken on the same date and categorised into the respective category (some appear to be non-dupes), while also adding the relevant by-date sortkey to the upload, which I realised I should have done while applying the cat. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 17:02, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Don-vip, yeah, I just independently noticed the problem when I saw that 1234 had merged one into a file I watchlisted. There's the additional problem that, because they come from Flickr, the attributions and licenses are all kinds of messed up and need some tidying, and they weren't categorized. Mass Flickr imports tend to be awful. I'll start working through the contribs as well, maybe starting at the bottom of the Rosetta pile. Huntster (t @ c) 20:19, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

When this image was uploaded on June 16, 2019, it matched the copyright source video. After being overwritten by picture that do not match the copyrighted video on July 23, 2020, it has been continuously modified and used by different users. Is there any way to prevent these images from being added to Wikipedia projects by IP user?

Some IP (I assume they are the same person and just change his IP) from Malaysia keep adding some photos of Singaporean actors/actress to random Wikipedia articles, not only at Chinese Wikipedia but also some small Wikipedia projects with few active users. I have tried requesting for protect the certain articles and block the IP but some weeks later he uses another IP and vandalizes another pages and other wikis. This lasts for a very long time. Now the only way for me to stop this is to check the "File usage on other wikis" section on the image info page from time to time.

Thanks for your suggestion but maybe global block doesn't work because he keeps changing his IP address, some are from Johor, some are from KL, some are from other cities in Malaysia. He doesn't do any other vandalism except adding these photos, that's why I want to do something to these photos. As I said before, I have already tried to block the IP and protect the pages but he use another IP and then vandal another random pages. If there is a global abuse filter to stop IP from adding these photos to articles, that will work. "City of" in UK

At User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands/Category moves, a bunch of category move requests from User:Schlosser67 have been languishing for weeks. I don't know whether these are well-advised or not, and would as that some admin who has a clue would please take this on. A typical example is

Rename Category:Bus stations in Bradford to Category:Bus stations in the City of Bradford (7 entries moved, 0 to go) (Requested by Schlosser67) Covers the wider metropolitan borough, not just Bradford alone
