The Duesenberg J engine was designed by Fred S. Duesenberg and manufactured by the Lycoming Corporation exclusively for the Duesenberg automobile. It was available for the models J, JN, and with a Roots supercharger as the Supercharged J, and Supercharged JN, or as a retrofit. "SJ", "SJN" or "SSJ" were no official designations. This was the most powerful automobile engine available at the time.
C. 470 cars were built between December, 1928, and 1937.
It is a water cooled, straight eight cylinder, double overhead camshaft design engine with 32 valves: Capacity is 419,2 c.i (6876 cc), bore × stroke 3.75 × 4.74 in (95.3 × 120.5 mm).
Maximum power output is 265 bhp (198 kW) @ 4200 rpm, with supercharger 320 bhp (239 kW) @ 4750 rpm. A supercharged engine is not identifiable by engine number.
