Request

Hello.

Can you make the same updates you made in File:Syrian, Iraqi, and Lebanese insurgencies.png, in the supplementary maps File:Syrian Civil War map.svg (with the same stages like in the aforementioned regional map, because this map has not been updated since 26 March) and File:Iraq war map.png (because the Sinjar Resistance Units and PKK don't rule any territory in Iraq, and remove this description in the English text which has been forgotten) as well?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 31.200.15.157 (talk) 20:56, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, mate. I've updated the Iraq map. Not sure how to update the other one, but I know someone who does. I'll let him know that map is out of date next time I see him. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nate Hooper (talk • contribs) 13:01, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Turkish advances in Northern Iraq

What are your sources for the Turkish advances against Iraqi Kurdistan around Soran that you added in the last revision? --AntiodonoghuE23 (talk) 14:35, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, The TAF has been in the area, fighting against the PKK since March https://www.iraqinews.com/iraq-war/turkish-troops-penetrate-deep-northern-iraq-clash-pkk-fighters/ However, it was always a guerilla conflict, so mapping it was always hard. Last week there were some fighting around Soran (here is a video https://twitter.com/RudawEnglish/status/994523354601349120) (and here is a map https://twitter.com/iraqiinfo_eng/status/994312728788525056). I thought I would add Turkish colours for places where their presence was confirmed (like the area north of Soran, as well as a few pockets north of there). It's not perfect, by any means, and I'd welcome others to edit the map if they have new sources. Template:AntiodonoghuE23 Nate Hooper (talk) 03:11, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dashishah

Hey Nate, thanks for all the great work on the insurgency map! I found this story from Fox News (unfortunately couldn't find it at another outlet) that shows SDF advances against IS in Hassakeh province. Thanks again for keeping the map updated. Gabriel syme (talk) 14:54, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. Cheers, m8. Gabriel syme Nate Hooper (talk) 05:07, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Are you still active?

It's been almost a month since you've updated the Syrian, Iraqi, and Lebanese insurgencies map. --2600:8805:2401:C400:E508:34F:7ED2:791C 13:13, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I've been busy lately, but I'm back now. I just updated the map! I've also got another "frontline gif," which I'll upload to wiki/Daraa_offensive_(June_2018) when the battle is over. Nate Hooper (talk) 05:05, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New Isis pockets

Hello, about the two new Isis pockets in the South, do you know their exact location or are they moving?86.252.211.62 13:53, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop editorializing on the Syrian Civil War map

Describing Assad's red as "beautiful" and saying that the surrender of Fua and Kefraya "feels bad" undermines neutrality. Erhik (talk) 18:24, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, fair enough. I won't do it again Erhik Nate Hooper (talk) 04:23, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Okay great, also I should thank you for your excellent overall contributions to the map. Erhik (talk) 16:52, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Other Stuff

The large Syrian desert area has already been captured by SAA. Please refer to syriancivilwarmap.com. --2607:FB90:786:63C5:0:2F:7245:C801 01:14, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any updates to the map coming? --103.199.27.41 13:11, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Check the map now (; I only remembered to update it after I saw your message. Moral of the story: Ask and you shall receive 103.199.27.41 Nate Hooper (talk) 16:45, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, the large ISIS area bordering Iraq has been fully captured by the SDF. https://mobile.twitter.com/SyriaWar2/status/1025404707848765440 --2607:FB90:5445:621A:278A:70E7:128D:6497 19:57, 3 August 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2607:FB90:54A9:200A:A13D:D345:383E:EFB5 (talk) 19:35, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Did they clean the Hajin pocket from ISIS?161.253.75.216 20:51, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No, not yet. In fact ISIS has gained ground against the Kurds recently. It's because the SDF is focusing on bolstering their defenses on the northern border with Turkey. Nate Hooper (talk) 15:43, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any chance you could remove the DMZ. It kind of makes the map look more complicated than it's supposed to be in my opinion. --KelseyBelmonteBass (talk) 20:33, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Kelsey, that might actually be a good idea and I do agree (when I uploaded it, I asked if people thought it looked too cluttered, but I didn't get much feedback at the time). So thanks for your feedback! The map was originally made by me and an American guy. He still has his map without the DMZ, I'll just copy and paste his Idlib area onto this map later tonight. Question

How long do you think it will be before the ISIS caliphate is gone? --ElisaiaCantohos1 (talk) 18:08, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, don't worry about Vermont, I like questions. I'd say that their pocket on the Euphrates might last an entire month or two (they still have a few thousand fighters, and they are fanatical), but I might be wildly wrong on that. As for their existence as a gorilla force or a terror group, I don't think it will disappear in our lifetime. Of course history moves in unexpected directions but the effort of "reformers" to fight against Islamic extremism, I would argue is folly. Given that their interpretation of the Quran varies from plausible, to outright correct and that somewhere in the area of 15% of Muslims support them or groups like them, I think they will be around for a very long time, unfortunately. Nate Hooper (talk) 00:36, 19 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I believe that ISIL's physical Caliphate will be completely destroyed within a month or two (from the time of this writing). They only have about 2,000–2,500 fighters left in their Baghuz al-Fawqani enclave (my own estimates, based on ground reports), and they are vastly outmanned and outgunned and trapped in a 1/2 square kilometer piece of land. Aside from this small pocket, ISIL possibly has a larger desert pocket straddling between eastern Homs and western Deir ez-Zor (where ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi could be hiding), but when these areas fall, ISIL is pretty much finished as a military power in the Middle East. However, the insurgency and terrorist network overall will probably continue to last for years, if not decades, until ISIL's ideology finally loses its appeal. By the way, Nate Hooper, please be aware that the person who asked you this question (and other similar accounts earlier) are all sockpuppets of User:Angela Criss, who has been Globally Locked and de facto Globally Banned for his persistent cross-wiki vandalism and trolling. Their future socks may make some positive contributions to this site, but I would strongly advise you to closely scrutinize their edits. In any case, if you see this person again, please report them to m:SRG for Global Locking; in the meantime, you can report their socks here to a local admin, like User:Magog the Ogre for blocking. Their abusive behavior on the Wikimedia sites have become bad enough that we can't just sit back and let them have a free hand anymore. LightandDark2000 (talk) 05:01, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PS, thanks for the map updates. I highly appreciate it. LightandDark2000 (talk) 05:01, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. Thanks for letting me know User:LightandDark2000 Nate Hooper (talk) 01:46, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Nate

Hey, are you still active? It's been almost 6 months and the SAA is advancing on the Idlib-based rebel stronghold again. --Marcos.valentini.35 (talk) 03:01, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Marcos. Yes, I'm still around. I saw that other people had been editing the map (this was maybe two months ago) and thought to myself "Ah, my work here is done." Although I've mainly been doing other things lately I'll look into it again. Nate Hooper (talk) 14:55, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

glad you've returned!

Very much appreciate you coming back to edit the map again! 206.53.88.85 04:21, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks man. The main reason I didn't edit the map for a long time was because there was little happening (apart from the Hama offensive, I was away then). Anyway, rest assured that whenever there's a major battle going on, I'll always be there to edit the map. Nate Hooper (talk) 13:54, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edit I realise this seeminly contradicts the last thing I said... I don't know why I said that. I guess my thinking was that my work was done for that time. Haha. Nate Hooper (talk) 13:57, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mlpwtfisthat's opinion on the situation

I don't know about you, but I personally hope Turkey ends up annexing at least some of the territory they're currently occupying in northern Syria. --Mlpwtfisthat Backup 7.0 (talk) 23:23, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I mainly just want the Kurds to reconcile with the Syrian government. Turks taking some land wouldn't be the worst thing because it will allow them to resettle refugees who might otherwise end up in Europe. That's just my personal opinion though. Nate Hooper (talk) 01:34, 19 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Turkish Operation GIF

today, according to SOHR and multiple of sources, the Turkish Army and TFSA have captured Al-Mubarakiyah,Al-Shakariyah,Bab Al-Khair,Umm Ashba and Barqah from SDF,via a border incursion.AlAboud83 (talk) 18:53, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks mate. I'll be sure to have those added for the next frame Nate Hooper (talk) 01:33, 19 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I made the edit, it can be found here [Rojava gif] Unfortunately it is the last edit I will make on it @AlAboud83: , thanks for taking an interest though Nate Hooper (talk) 14:13, 19 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How is the GIF made,i might try to learn how to do them,or is there other editors who are willing to do the gif.AlAboud83 (talk) 18:10, 19 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

To edit it, simply open the gif, and right click it, then select "save image as" now you have the gif file. Don't worry about that for now, you'll use that file a little later. Next go back to the gif, right click and select "copy image" when it's on the last frame (timing is needed haha). Then copy that onto paint (at least that's what I do). You could probably use photoshop or something but ms paint is all you really need. Then edit the next frame so it matches the most recent day and save it. The date up the top left is Arial font, size 26. Also, there's a tiny little selection of the colours up there which I sometimes use. Anyway, I'm sure you can figure it out. Save it. Now you should have a gif with each day except the most recent and a picture file of the most recent day which you just edited. Then simply go to this website: [[1]]. Click "upload images" and select the gif, then click "upload images" again and select your picture. Then scroll down and click "create gif animation" and it should have your latest day added. @AlAboud83: I wish you the best. If you have any other questions, let me know. Nate Hooper (talk) 1:13, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Request for pictures

Hi, I love this gif! But could you provide somewhere each individual frame as a jpeg, so that I can compare in detail the day to day progression of the frontline?Ingebot (talk) 23:17, 20 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed! uh, I have to make some edits on earlier frames - and add the last 2 days. I'm at work atm, so expect a response from me in around 10 hours. Nate Hooper (talk) 04:13, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Here you go, you can get each picture here: [2] @Ingebot: Nate Hooper (talk) 12:31, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nice! ThanksIngebot (talk) 02:20, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bleached colours

I think the orange you use for the joint SDF/SAA control in your gif looks a bit bleached. Maybe you could change it to look more like the joint SDF/SAA daily claims? Χρηστος Μυτακιδης (talk) 04:14, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, I'll experiment a bit and I'll post some samples in a sandbox (in a few hours when I get home). Thanks for the feedback Nate Hooper (talk) 08:14, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
