This photo is OLD. There is not a school library in the state of Minnesota that has a card catalog. But i do no have the rights to change it. Help me please. Or YOU can do this. Could not attach the photo-----kept showing errors

  • I don't get this at all. (1) Articles in an encyclopedia are not just about the present. (2) [[File:Digital tools plus print materials live in the school library]] isn't even syntactically correct (can't have "File:" without some extension like "JPG" or "PNG"), so I have no idea what image you meant to link here. ARTHUR KAUFMANN A PROFESSOR OF ART ON GERMANY AND HAD BEEN DECLARED A NON ARIYAN AND HIS ART WAS CONSIDERED DEGENERATE, HE WAS FLEEING NAZI GERMANY HE WAS SPONSORED BY GEORGE GERSHWIN FOR ENTRY INTO THE USA. MY MOTHER TOOK A PHOTOGRAPH OF PAINTINGS HE WAS WORKING ON AS HE PAINTED HER PORTRAIT AS WELL AS GERSHWINS AND TOLLERS PORTRAIT. THE PHOTO OF THE PORTRAIT IS DATED 1939.

  • This must have been right at the end of Toller's life, since he died in 1939. I honestly don't know the copyright status of Kaufmann's work, especially because if they were "as he was working on" them he would not have registered a copyright at the time the photos were taken; also I have no idea whether his heirs would have renewed the copyright (as was necessary in the US in that era). You might better ask about this at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, because it is a tricky case, and could use an expert opinion. - Jmabel ! talk 03:56, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Convenience link: File:Photo of Portrait of Ernst Toller by Arthur Kaufmann.pdf. The license there is certainly wrong: either Kaufmann's copyright persists (in which case you are in no position to grant a license, only his heirs are) or not (in which case the work is in the public domain). Separately, you ask if you may upload a photo of Toller (I assume that is distinct from the painting, and is simply a photograph of the man).   • Prior to January 1978 in the U.S, the duration of all copyrights was split into two consecutive 28-year terms. During the last (28th) year of the initial term, authors were entitled to renew their copyrights for a further term of 28 years. Through a series of amendments to the Copyright Act, the renewal term was extended 19 years, and then an additional 20 years, for a total of 95 years (28+28+19+20=95). Arthur Kaufmann died in 1971, it is possible the copyright of the work was renewed in 1960 (if ever published) before his death. Thus, if his heir recapture his copyright for the extended term after his death, then the image will not be in the public domain until 2027. We have two problems here, we aren't sure if the work was ever published and we aren't sure the copyright was recapture by his heir after his death. Photo of coup rally in Istanbul

@BM Tornado: what Rimshot is saying is that you need permission from the copyright holder of the image, in this case from the original photographer or AFP if the photographer is an employee of AFP and the work was produced in the course of their services. This permission must be sent to our support team. You can only upload images here without a written permission from anyone if you took the images yourself. Need help using the correct license

We manage several music artists and do their public relations & marketing. I don't know under what license to put up their images as they keep being deleted. We have 100% rights and access to use these images from the artists themselves. The images belong to the artists. How should I upload them so they dont get deleted? I'd be grateful for some help. Your uploads being deleted probably has nothing to do with the license selection and everything to do with lack of evidence to support your claims that you personally created and hold the copyright to the works – or the presence of evidence to the contrary.
For example, you are claiming that you are the author (creator) and copyright holder of File:Buika in Concert.jpg. However, unless you are Javi Rojo, you are not the author of File:Buika in Concert.jpg, and it is not your own work. And unless Javi Rojo is your employee (which seems unlikely), or there is a written contract mentioning the words "work made for hire" or "transfer of copyright", then you are not the copyright holder either.
The only one who can issue a valid license to a copyrighted work is the legitimate copyright holder, so the appropriate license is whichever license the legitimate copyright holder has agreed to – if any. So for works created by a third party and/or where the copyright is held by a third party, you need to accurately attribute them and provide evidence that they have approved publication under a free license.

New to Uploading Pictures to Wikipedia

Hello to you. I am so new to the uploading of pictures into Wikipedia. The subject concerned here is the upload of some pictures for the Calgary CTrain stations topic. I produced the pictures myself, but I do not know if I am reading the rules right. Some pictures here are buildings that surround a particular CTrain station. An Image from Wiki Law School

Hello, can this image of Prof. Janet Halley of the Harvard law school be added to the Commons? It is used in Wiki Law School, but doesn't seem to have licensing information. Hi. I uploaded a picture of Airblue's, airline of Pakistan, destination map picture. While uploading, the license I chose was that it isn't my work and I provided the link of the website and its author but now the picture says " The uploader did not provide sufficient information (a valid and suitable tag) on this media's copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file could be deleted seven days after the upload (24 August 2016). Please note that Commons does not accept files claimed under fair use. It is suggested to read the intro of Commons' licensing policy, about essential information and (in many cases) about Internet images ". Help required about what to do!

public domain

I am not sure who and where this message should go, I am having problems of getting information on images on the public domain hoping that you can help. Do you know if all images in the public domain is free to download and use to teach a lesson in education to students? is there a way to make sure the images are okay to use.

  • If an image is in the public domain, then by definition you it is free to download and to use in any lawful manner. Edittools

Hi, I am asking here because I could not find any hint elsewhere, at least not in the preferences pages.

The so called "edittools" below the edit box offer many items for e.g. the text insertion; some do I need frequently, some never. And some I am missing.

Is there a possibility to customize these tools - in a simple way, without an intimate knowledge of Java & Co.?

Time period

There's a note at the bottom of a website reading as such:"© 2003-2011 All the rights of this website belong to **** group. Copying the works without permission is illegal." It means that the website was last updated 2011 and copyright will not expire before 2081, possibly much later. In reality, it is of no consequence, because it does not distinguish between the copyright durations of different material on the site (older photos' copyright may expire earlier, some material might be ineligible for copyright, etc.) In general, you can assume anything remotely modern found on any website to be copyrighted. --rimshottalk 07:30, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The expiring date of 2081 mentioned by Rimshot depends on weather the work was first published on the website which reads © 2003-2011 and the US copyright law. It also depends on the author of the work and the copyright law in their country. If the author is a Somali person for example, the copyright of the work will also depends on the Somali copyright law regardless of where it was first published. All the best. Hi KenBarlow. The original photographer is the copyright holder of the work with the explicit right to release it under a free license. In this case, either you or Debby needs to get the original photographer to send permission to COM:OTRS. @Till.niermann: If you're using the Upload Wizard, you can select "This file is not my own work." option and then fill out the requested information and select the "Creative Commons Attribution 3.0" license. Do I need to credit a photo in public domain that isn't credited on Wiki Commons?

Although Wiki Commons says this photo is in the public domain and doesn't mention the source, I have seen it in a book as credited to a historical society. Is this really in the public domain and do I have to credit the historical society?

The credit to a historical society is most likely not a credit to the 'author', but instead to a 'source' for a copy of an image, and the copy obtained from Commons is not from that source. You are not legally obligated to give any attribution or sourcing for a public domain image, though you 'should' (in my opinion) for the sake of historical accuracy if nothing else. I don't se any actual proof that the image is PD, but it probably is. The General disclaimer definitely applies, especially for any commercial use. Reventtalk 00:28, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to upload a photo to and article "Marjorie Lynn" and I keep getting an error message. I'm confused since this if my first time uploading and the photo seems to be fine. Any help would be appreciated.

I see from Special:AbuseLog/1444644 that you encountered an upload filter that prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload process that you used. The reason for this filter is that such uploads overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. An 970×1255 pixel image is quite small and more typical of a file downloaded from the Internet than what a camera would produce. My category was destroyed by someone ignorant

I made up a category called "Sackabfuhr" (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Sackabfuhr?uselang=de) here that deals ONLY with a special form of waste collection ONLY in the city and state of hamburg, Germany (cf. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sackabfuhr_(Hamburg) ). That's the reason why I called it "Sackabfuhr" with the German term. Some ignorant user destroyed the category and split some files to a general waste bag category, other files have gone to the nirvana ... I'm really, really, really angry. Why wasn't I contacted first? If someone does not understand the German description, why don't they ask me first? THIS BULK ACTION MUST BE REVERTED ASAP! How do I do that? My article on the Sackabfuhr is likely to appear on the German Wikipedia start page soon, and all visitors clicking on the Commonscat link will now find everything but not my 44 files showing Sackabfuhr in Hamburg! Nothing was destroyed and nobody should be titled "ignorant" here. I cleaned some unsystematically named categories and insufficiently categorized files and categories. As can be seen in the history, the category Sackabfuhr was never categorized under "Hamburg" before my edits (i.e. the German description didn't correspond to the categorization nor to the category name). Even the files were not categorized by location anyway. @ GeoTrinity: Btw., when you want to link a category, use simply a colon before the word "Category". [[:Category:Hamburg]] displays as Category:Hamburg. And when you want link any wikipedia article from Commons, you can use the same way with the language prefix: [[:de:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg)]] displays as de:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg). I invested a lot of time to write the article in the German wikipedia project and to create the corresponding category. Of course you are ignorant since you simply did not understand that "Sackabfuhr" is not the general collection of waste bags but the official way of collecting trash in specific red or pink bags for those 13,000 households that don't have other waste containers. It must not be confused with other, general waste bag collections. Therefore, your category "waste bag collection in Hamburg" is simply wrong since Sackabfuhr has nothing at all to do with other, free, or paid forms of waste bag collections. You dissolved the differentiation though. And whenever a category is useful for something specific, the terminus technicus has to be used, cf. the existing category "gelber sack", even if this is in a language other than German. What you did, is NOT an improvement but you destroyed a working category for something very specific that was set up correctly by me, with a lot of effort, by the way. I will now look for a way to revert your crap on my own. If you don't fully understand what this category is about, you better leave your hands off it. What you did was a mistake. GeoTrinity asked me for help and review of the current situation. Here my 2 cents: As far as I see ŠJů acted in good faith but in lack of knowledge of the specific waste handling of Hamburg. This can happen and should be no drama. After reading the article de:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg) I suggest to (re)create a specific Category:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg) to collect all images of pink waste bags of Hamburg. Does this sound as a solution? I can add my cents again. Every city and every municipality have its own "specific waste handlings" and every city or municipality have specific colours, design and types of bags, containers etc. There is nothing mysterious nor incomprehensible on the Hamburg waste bag collection system. As far as I see GeoTrinity acted in good faith but obviously (as proved above) in lack of knowledge of the specific principles and handling of wiki categorization system at Commons. This can happen and should be no drama. The systematic category Category:Waste bag collection in Hamburg contains (in its corresponding subcategories) all images of "pink waste bags" and all images of waste bag containers from the previous Sackabfuhr category (which was specific primarily by the fact that it was improperly named and quite deficiently and inadequately categorized). There was no reason for panic or hysteria, no reason for rude assaults and insults – nothing was destroyed, nothing is disappeared. On the contrary, several serious categorization errors were corrected by me and the Hamburger collection system was made integrated to the categorization structure. The only problem was that GeoTrinity didn't orientate himself in the categorization structure and is not willing to accept that category names are generally in English (except for proper names or brands) and categories need to be integrated to the categorization system and conform with it.
Generally, "waste bag collection" categories contain mostly images from municipalities where is a system similar to the Hamburger one. As far as we will seen that there exist several distinct waste bag collection systems in Hamburg, we can try to distinguish them, however the word "Sackabfuhr" is not able to do so anyway because it is a literal translation of the common English description term "bag collection" only. Currently I see no need for such a distinguishing. City of Hamburg has the only waste bag collection system. As proved by a Google test, "Sackabfuhr" is not a specific "brand" name of the Hamburger system but a common term used also in other German-language cities which use or consider similar waste bag collection systems (whether for residual mixed waste or for sorted waste).
Raymond, what is your idea how should the (re)created category be integrated to the standard categorization system? According to your vision, Category:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg) should be a subcategory of Category:Waste bag collection in Hamburg and should have specific subcategories Category:Waste bags in Hamburg ("Sackabfuhr" system), Category:Waste bag containers in Hamburg ("Sackabfuhr" system), Category:Waste bag collection trucks in Hamburg ("Sackabfuhr" system) etc.? Or even your idea is to have the longed-for category as a parallel unsorted, unstructured and not interconnected mix? A gallery page is better maintainable than any needlessly complicated and unsystematic categorization, and above all, it would not disrupt the categorization system. File format changes automatically while moving Audio Files

Hi, I was moving some audio files to their appropriate names but the file format has automatically changed from .ogg to .oga. Now, even if I try to change it to .ogg, it does not happen and say that this file name already exists. Take "File:Pa-ਆਟਾ.oga" for example. It's been like that for years. If you try to move .JPG it automatically becomes .jpg too. Ogg automatically becomes Oga. I've never heard of anything that changes this. INeverCry 06:26, 2 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If file extensions (not format) changes while they are moved, then they should have changed on the time of uploading. This change of file extensions create some problems, like group of files not in harmony (which is caused by one or more files having different file extensions), forcing a filemover to move a lot of files in the group to be in harmony instead of moving just few. @Yurevich777: Assuming that we are talking about File:Yury Revich.jpg, though, there are two problems. (1) only the copyright holder can license copyrights to a photo. Typically that would be the photographer. You as the subject can do so only if those rights have been signed over to you in writing.   • That would be one solution. The other two are (1) if the photographer has a web presence, he or she could post it there with a clear statement of what license applies, and you could reference that as the source or (2) the photographer could send an email as described in COM:OTRS. You could prepare that email yourself, to minimize their work. Using a Wikipedia photo for a cover image

Deletion of Pictures "Ukranenland"

Hello Help Desk Team,

a couple of days ago I tried to push a deletion of the following pictures:

I'm a member of the museum in Germany where this Commons/Wikipedia article is about. (Ukranenland Historische Werkstätten e.V.) The chief of the museum asked me for help in this Wikipedia/Commons issue, because he is not into computer and internet.

ALL pictures that are shown in the link are very old. Some of them were photographed after a flood that destroyed the museum. So the pics don't show the actual status of the musem AT ALL.

Some of the pics are even very hurting to the image of the museum and because of that,it could mean an economical damage to our institution.

I marked every pic there for deletion, but one of your admins blocked me after that. He thought I was a spam-bot. That's not the case.


So once again....please help to delete this horrible pictures!

To replace it and to show the real image of the museum, we got many professional shots that can be uploaded after the deletion!

There's no reason to assume that any pictures should show the current status of the museum. Photographs show the past by their nature.
I don't think it likely that these files will be deleted; I think the best thing you could do is contextualize them and provide new images showing the current state of the museum. (You'll probably need to send a message to OTRS to clarify that you represent the museum and that the museum has the rights to freely license these new professional pictures.)--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:34, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Documentation of history is well within the scope of Commons. You should, instead, create subcategories that show the pre-flood museum, and the effects of the flood, and then keep only 'current' images in the top category. Template for tag when uploading an edited version of a picture already in the Commons?

Hello. I've never found the Commons site very easy to navigate and I can't find where the templates for the different copyright statuses are. I am about to upload an edited version of a picture that is already in the public domain and in the Commons (I'm removing a large frame around the image), before using it in a Wikipedia article. Could someone please point me towards the tag/template etc. to use to link it back to the original file and mark it as public domain too?
