Summary
editDescriptionRed (14011005644).jpg | "Danish Refugee Council and UNICEF have worked with the community of Aslam in Hajjah governorate to improve hygiene in the village. As part of the project an existing open well was given a stone and cement surrounding. This will ensure the water in the well does not get contaminated, it also should stop people falling in which has happened in the past. We are also working with the community on how they store the water. .Most of the jerry-cans I saw were thick with algae. Also the way the water was being poured into the jerry-cans needed improvement..The community asked for the well to be connected to a pumping system so that the women and girls would not have to spend so much time collecting water. This is a very good point. Our project will help on health and hygiene but it will not free up girls and women’s time from this chore. If girls do not have to fetch water it is much more likely they will go to school. This was something for me to think about on my way back..Another interesting thing about this village was how Yemeni children of very different appearance mixed together without apparent discrimination. There were very dark kids, next to olive skinned ones and the odd child with a touch of blond hair. In other parts of the country this mixing is not possible and the darker skin children, the muhamasheen or Akdam are excluded."
