d chickadee, with his breezy man-ner and cheering songs. Usually a very regular customer isthe little black-and-white-spotted downywoodpecker. The hairy woodpecker,which looks just like his downy cousin,but is quite a bit larger, sometimescomes, but it is a shyer bird and gen-erally less plenty. Another familiarfriend is the white-breasted nuthatch,an exceedingly vivacious fellow, blue-gray above, with black or blackishcrown, and white beneath, a regularacrobat who climbs like a woodpeckerand is as apt to run headlong down atree as up it. The saucy blue jay mayalso pay his respects. The seed-eating birds do not care forthe suet, so for them there should be asupply of seed or small or crushed grainplaced out near house or barn in somewarm, sheltered spot, with a coverabove it to keep it from being buriedunder the snow.
