ation spring from such adisheartening beginning, and from suchGod-like patience and faith of a littlehandful of men and women. Belle Paxson Drury. AN INTERRUPTED SERMON. (Written on hearing a yellow-hird sing during a church service.) Twittering, fluttering, lilting on high. Dipping and tipping wee head with each measure.Preening and cooing and crooning near by. Yellow-bird! Whence comes such rapturous pleasure ?What does he know of the Preachers oration. Flooding through archway and stained glass ajar.Swinging and flinging and bringing elation, Isnt he spreading bird-gospel afar? Spilling and thrilling and trilling his carol, Shaking soft feathers of olive and gold.Where gray boughs and green leaves set oft* such apparel. Hid in the elm-tree so stately and old.Warble and treble and ripple, sweet singer! Love is tlic theme which such anthems inspire. Our Father keeps watch oer the tiny joy-bringcr, Surely lie cares for His small feathered ciioir. —FtiU.i. Willi rii-:R I^Iovnton. \7()
Text Appearing After Image:
THE TURNSTONE. (Arenaria intcrpres.) \lx. Herbert K. Job has said: Manya sojourn by the sea has been bright-ened for me by the presence of theshore-birds. They are Natures con-tribution toward fiUing a vacuum.Every other sort of locahty—forest, pasture, prairie, mountain, swamp andocean—has its pecuHar birds, and sohas, therefore, the shore. Amongthese birds of the shore none are moreinteresting or handsome than the Turn-stones. While they are nearly cosmo-politan in their distribution, they fre-quent only the marine beaches and, inthe interior of America, the shores ofthe Great Lakes and the larger rivers. For this reason they are not known toa large number of those who are inter-ested in birds. If one desires to studythe Turnstones, a visit to the seacoastduring their migrations is desirable. There they are not uncommon at thetime of their northward journey in May,and also during their southward trip inthe fall. In such a locality, they mayoften be seen feeding along the outerbeach
