Tile panel with flowers,
English: Tile panel with flowers

England, London, 1876

By the 1870\'s , most British tilework was factory-produced, but this panel was hand-painted, in keeping with the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement. The floral design was the only large-scale tile pattern of this type sold by Morris & Co. The panel is from Membland Hall in Devon, probably from a bathroom. Built by George Devey for the banker E.C. Baring, the house was demolished in 1928.

Made at the William De Morgan pottery, designed by William Morris for Morris & Co., London, blanks supplied by the Architectural Pottery Co, Poole, Dorset

Slip-covered earthenware, painted under the glaze

Given by Charles and Lavinia Handley-Read
