Sterling silver harmony ball necklace, 'Sweet Protection'

Polished sterling tendrils encircle and protect a textured globe in this necklace from Sukartini. Covered with Bali's traditional jawan, Z or silver granules, the petite pendant centers a silver chain. Inside, a brass globe makes a soft chiming sound. Also called "angel necklaces" and "harmony balls," Such necklaces are often worn by pregnant women in Bali and also in Mexico. On a shorter chain, the necklace is used as an amulet. The chain sometimes lets the pendant reach to the belly and the delicate sounds are thought to soothe the mother and the baby she is carrying. Some believe it summons a guardian angel, thus making it a symbol of loving protection.
