I thought I’d share a bit more of my process for quick botanical sketches. Plants are a great subject to draw for beginners, as they are very patient (don’t move or run away) and interesting and pretty to look at. I never get tired of drawing flowers. The first step is always to get a grasp of the absolute basics – basic shapes, volumes and angles. Almost always I start with a very rough (and light) pencil drawing, just to get a feel for the placement of the different shapes. The yellow of the flowers was completely different. But I was using an old palette with limited pigments. A good way to force myself to not obsess about matching colours exactly. And my Lamy Safari with blue ink is still attached to another pen to use as an extended tool, so I played with loose line. Can't remember which I did first. The pen first I think.
