How Trees Grow ~ The outer bark protects the inner wood layers from injuries, pests & disease. The inner bark (phloem) carries synthesized food from the leaves to the cambium layer & other growing portions of the tree. The cambium layer is where active growth takes place, making more wood & bark. Sapwood (xylem) transports sap - water & nutrients - from the roots to the leaves. The center of the tree, which provides strength & support, is the heartwood (dead wood or inactive wood).
