Step 1: Decide how much ambient light you want to let into your scene.

Pro tip, if you want a brighter subject and darker background: don’t let a lot of light in (don’t make the scene bright).

Want a brighter, more ambient image? Let in more light.

This is why setting your ambient light beforehand is important. Your ambient settings will completely transform the way your flash photos look and feel.

Step 2: Turn on the flash (settings don’t matter at this point) and take a test frame. Review the frame then turn the flash power up or down accordingly until you have the you have your subject lit up just right.
