Once every few years, the Namibian desert experiences what is known as the Sandhof lily bloom. The lily bulbs sit in the clay beneath the desert floor, waiting patiently for years some centimers of rainfall.

Every few years California's southern deserts see enough rainfall that the barren landscape bursts into bloom with a wide variety of spectacular wildflowers. This particular year (2010), conditions for the Desert Lilies (Hesperocallis undulata) seemed to be particularly excellent and hundreds of these plants put on a fantastic show in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park...
