The Potters Shed • Pottery Classes in Adelaide on Instagram: "Opening the base of your pot is a very simple task but a few tips can make your life easier for when you start pulling the walls. First, make sure you keep your hands connected, having them touching gives an anchor for the finger opening the clay, and it reduces your chances of having uneven walls during the opening. Second, aim for that V shape to start with. It will be easier to fix if you have gone too far down, or if its still too thick on the base. Third, when you start opening, try to pull towards yourself in a straight line, carefull to not go lower, we tend to apply pressure down when opening, and it will make that part of the base thinner, you will have to work more to make your base levelled. Stacia Miller on Instagram: "When I wire under a finished plate to release it from the bat, I sometimes run into complications. The wire can make the plate too thin, or if I wire it while the clay is too wet, it re-attaches to the bat. I also sometimes don’t wire it evenly enough, so the plate does not have uniform bottom thickness. My solution here is to cover the plate with craft foam before throwing! No wiring necessary. There are some downsides, namely that the foam can stretch a bit while throwing. I’ve wondered for a while if this would work well with something less stretchy, like tarpaper. But I haven’t gotten around to testing that theory. In the meantime, I hope this helps somebody make a better plate! #PotteryReel #PotteryReels #PottersOfInstagram #PotteryPlate #CeramicPlate
