An Alternative Method for Thermal Plume–Induced Aerosol Release and Deposition Calculations in Large Geometries Using fireFoam / Plagge, Michael (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Krause, Ulrich ; Da Riva, Enrico ; Schäfer, Christoph ; Forkel-Wirth, Doris (CERN)
Being a particle physics laboratory, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) plans, constructs, and maintains installations emitting ionizing radiation during operation. Activation of present material is a consequence. [...]

Identification and characterization of design fires and particle emissions to be used in performance‐based fire design of nuclear facilities / Perović, Darko (Lund U.) ; Van Hees, Patrick (Lund U.) ; Madsen, Dan (Lund U.) ; Malmborg, Vilhelm (Lund U.) ; Gren, Louise (Lund U.) ; Pagels, Joakim (Lund U.) ; Rios, Oriol (CERN) ; La Mendola, Saverio (CERN)
CERN operates one of the most complex particle accelerator facilities in the world.Several different hazards, including fires, are present and need to be investigated and reduced to a tolerable level. Toward this goal, CERN aims at developing a catalog containing detailed fire dynamics descriptions of combustible items present in its facilities. [...]

ACUTRI : a computer code for assessing doses to the general public due to acute tritium releases / Yokoyama, S
Tritium, which is used as a fuel of a D-T burning fusion reactor, is the most important radionuclide for the safety assessment of a nuclear fusion experimental reactor such as ITER. [...]

ESS fire- and explosion safety programme - deterministic and probabilistic conditions – case study on acceptance criteria to open smoke hatches in the instrument building. / Jörud, Fredrik (speaker) (European Spallation Source)
A number of Swedish acts and ordinances give the basic requirements of facility safety. None of these are tailored for ESS, hence interpretation is required for appropriate application. [...]

Analysis of the Radiation Field in ATLAS Using 2008 2011 Data from the ATLAS-MPX Network / Campbell, M (CERN) ; Heijne, E (IEAP CTU, Prague) ; Leroy, C (U. Montreal (main)) ; Martin, J-P (U. Montreal (main)) ; Mornacchi, G (CERN) ; Nessi, M (CERN) ; Pospisil, S (IEAP CTU, Prague) ; Solc, J (IEAP CTU, Prague) ; Soueid, P (U. Montreal (main)) ; Suk, M (IEAP CTU, Prague) et al.
The ATLAS-MPX collaboration has installed a network of 16 Medipix2 pixel detector based, single-quantum-sensitive devices before the LHC start-up in 2008 at various positions in the ATLAS experimental and technical caverns. [...]

Thermal effects compensation and associated uncertainty for large magnet assembly precision alignment / Doytchinov, I (CERN ; Cranfield U.) ; Shore, P (CERN ; Teddington, Natl. Phys. Lab) ; Nicquevert, B (CERN) ; Tonnellier, X (Cranfield U.) ; Heather, A (Cranfield U.) ; Modena, M (CERN)
Big science and ambitious industrial projects continually push technical requirements forward beyond the grasp of conventional engineering techniques. An example of these are the extremely tight micrometric assembly and alignment tolerances required in the field of celestial telescopes, particle accelerators, and the aerospace industry. [...]

Phase transition observations and discrimination of small cloud particles by light polarization in expansion chamber experiments / Nichman, Leonid (Manchester U.) ; Fuchs, Claudia (PSI, Villigen) ; Järvinen, Emma (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Ignatius, Karoliina (TROPOS, Leibniz) ; Höppel, Niko Florian (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Dias, Antonio (CERN) ; Heinritzi, Martin (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Simon, Mario (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Tröstl, Jasmin (PSI, Villigen) ; Wagner, Andrea Christine (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) et al.
Cloud microphysical processes involving the ice phase in tropospheric clouds are among the major uncertainties in cloud formation, weather, and general circulation models. The detection of aerosol particles, liquid droplets, and ice crystals, especially in the small cloud particle-size range below 50 μm, remains challenging in mixed phase, often unstable environments. No statistically significant effect of a short-term decrease in the nucleation rate on atmospheric aerosols / Dunne, E M (U. Leeds (main) ; Finnish Meteorological Inst.) ; Lee, L A (U. Leeds (main)) ; Reddington, C L (U. Leeds (main)) ; Carslaw, K S (U. Leeds (main))
Observed correlations between short-term decreases in cosmic ray ionisation and cloud and aerosol properties have been attributed to short-term decreases in the ion-induced nucleation rate. We use a global aerosol microphysics model to determine whether a 10 day reduction of 15% in the nucleation rate could generate a statistically significant response in aerosol concentrations and optical properties. [...]
