An experiment to study damage caused by the impact of 440 GeV/c protons on sample superconducting racetrack coils made from NbTi and Nb3Sn strands was recently carried out at CERN's HiRadMat facility. This paper reports on the detailed Monte Carlo simulations performed with FLUKA and Geant4 to evaluate the energy deposition of the 440 GeV/c proton beam on the sample coils positioned in the experimental setup. Investigations on NbTi superconducting racetrack coils under pulsed-current excitations / Abusaif, F (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Bernhard, A (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Bründermann, E (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Gancarcik, D (KIT, Karlsruhe ; CERN) ; Glamann, N (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Grau, A (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Saez de Jauregui, D (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Müller, A-S (KIT, Karlsruhe)
One of the key issues in the technology of superconductors is the protection against quenches. When designing a superconductor as a magnet, a coil or even current leads, the design should be made such that the superconductor withstands all operational conditions as fast discharges, pulsed loads or even rapid transient background fields.Computational modeling of pulsed-current characterization in a self-field NbTi racetrack sample coil has been performed using the finite element modelling software Opera as a step towards understanding the thermal and electromagnetic processes during a quench. The superconducting magnets used in high energy particle accelerators such as CERN’s LHC can be impacted by the circulating beam in case of specific failures. This leads to interaction of the beam particles with the magnet components, like the superconducting coils, through direct beam impact or via secondary particle showers. [...]

The energy stored in the particle beams of an accelerator such as CERNs LHC is substantial and requires a complex machine protection system to protect the equipment from damage. Despite efficient beam absorbers, several failure modes can lead to beam impact on superconducting magnets. [...]

The future upgrade of CERN's injector chain for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will lead to an increase of the beam brightness in the LHC. Beam absorbers are capturing missteered beams, but some limited beam impact on superconducting magnets can hardly be avoided. [...]

Bending Radius Limits of Different Coated REBCO Conductor Tapes - An Experimental Investigation with Regard to HTS Undulators / Richter, Sebastian C (CERN ; KIT, Karlsruhe, Dept. Compact FELs require short-period, high-field undulators in combination with compact accelerator structures to produce coherent light up to X-rays. Likewise, for the production of low emittance positron beams for future lepton colliders, like CLIC or FCC-ee, high-field damping wigglers are required. [...]

The production of low emittance positron beams for future linear and circular lepton colliders, like CLIC or FCC-ee, requires high-field damping wigglers. Just as compact free-electron lasers (FELs) require high-field but as well short-period undulators to emit high energetic, coherent photons. [...]

Change of Critical Current Density in Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn Strands After Millisecond Heating / Raginel, Vivien (CERN) ; Kleiven, David (Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Kulesz, Karolina (CERN) ; Mentink, Matthijs (CERN) ; Schmidt, Ruediger (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN)
The damage mechanisms and limits of superconducting magnet components due to direct beam impact are not well understood. The energy deposition from beam losses can cause significant temperature rise and mechanical stress in the magnet coils, which can lead to a degradation of the insulation strength and critical current of the superconductor.
