A necessary condition for high SRF performances in thin film coated cavities is the absence of substrate defects. For instance, in the past, defects originated around electron beam welds in high magnetic field areas have been shown to be the cause of performance limitations in Nb/Cu cavities. [...]

In the framework of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study, the development of thin-film coated superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities capable of providing higher accelerating fields (10 to 20 MV/m against 5 MV/m of LHC) represents a major challenge. The development of a test stand commissioned at CERN for the inductive measurement of the critical temperature (T$_{c}$c) of SC thin-film deposited on copper samples for SRF application is presented in this work. [...]

Cost efficiency and sustainability are critical challenges for future accelerator machines. Nb-coated Cu (Nb/Cu) superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) accelerating cavities, while requiring R&D; to meet high acceleration gradient performance standards, show potential for addressing these challenges. Reverse coating technique for the production of Nb thin films on copper for superconducting radio-frequency applications / Fonnesu, D (CERN) ; Baris, A (CERN) ; Calatroni, S (CERN) ; Lain Amador, L (CERN) ; Pfeiffer, S (CERN) ; Rosaz, G (CERN) ; Bonura, M (U. Geneva (main)) ; Senatore, C (U. Geneva (main))
In the framework of the Future Circular Collider Study, the development of thin-film coated superconducting radio-frequency copper cavities capable of providing higher accelerating fields (10–20 MV m$^{−1}$ against 5 MV m$^{−1}$ for the Large Hadron Collider) represents a major challenge. The method investigated here for the production of seamless niobium-coated copper cavities is based on the electroforming of the copper structure around a sacrificial aluminium mandrel that is pre-coated with a niobium thin film. Thickness effect on superconducting properties of niobium films for radio-frequency cavity applications / Bianchi, Antonio (INFN, Milan) ; Bonura, Marco (U. Geneva (main)) ; Carlos, Carlota P.A. (U. Geneva (main) ; CERN) ; Leith, Stewart (CERN) ; Rosaz, Guillaume (CERN) ; Senatore, Carmine (U. Geneva (main)) ; Venturini Delsolaro, Walter (CERN)
Niobium-coated copper radio-frequency cavities are cost-effective alternatives to bulk niobium cavities, given the lower material costs of copper substrates and their operation in liquid helium at around 4.2 K. However, these cavities historically exhibited a gradual degradation in performance with the accelerating field. [...]
