Optically sensitive Medipix2 detector for adaptive optics wavefront sensing / Vallerga, John ; McPhatea, Jason ; Tremsina, Anton ; Siegmund, Oswald ; Mikulec, Bettina ; Clark, Allan G /Medipix2 Collaboration
A new hybrid optical detector is described that has many of the attributes desired for the next generation adaptive optics (AO) wavefront sensors. The detector consists of a proximity focused microchannel plate (MCP) read out by multi-pixel application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips developed at CERN ("Medipix2") with individual pixels that amplify, discriminate and count input events. [...]

A new hybrid optical detector is described that has many of the attributes desired for the next generation AO wavefront sensors. The detector consists of a proximity focused MCP read out by four multi-pixel application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips developed at CERN (â€ワMedipix2”) with individual pixels that amplify, discriminate and count input events. A noiseless kilohertz frame rate imaging detector based on microchannel plates read out with the Medipix2 CMOS pixel chip / Medipix Collaboration
A new hybrid optical imaging detector is described that is being developed for the next generation adaptive optics (AO) wavefront sensors (WFS) for ground-based telescopes. The detector consists of a photocathode and proximity focused microchannel plates (MCPs) read out by the Medipix2 CMOS pixel ASIC. [...]

A high resolution, high frame rate detector based on a microchannel plate read out with the Medipix2 counting CMOS pixel chip. / Mikulec, Bettina ; Vallerga, J V ; McPhate, J B ; Tremsin, A S ; Siegmund, O H W ; Clark, Allan G /Medipix Collaboration
The future of ground-based optical astronomy lies with advancements in adaptive optics (AO) to overcome the limitations that the atmosphere places on high resolution imaging. A key technology for AO systems on future very large telescopes are the wavefront sensors (WFS) which detect the optical phase error and send corrections to deformable mirrors. [...]

Photon counting arrays for AO wavefront sensors / Vallerga, J ; Tremsin, A ; McPhate, J ; Mikulec, Bettina ; Clark, Allan G ; Siegmund, O /Medipix Collaboration
Future wavefront sensors for AO on large telescopes will require a large number of pixels and must operate at high frame rates. Unfortunately for CCDs, there is a readout noise penalty for operating faster, and this noise can add up rather quickly when considering the number of pixels required for the extended shape of a sodium laser guide star observed with a large telescope. A Medipix2-based imaging system for digital mammography with silicon pixel detectors / Bisogni, M G ; Delogu, P ; Fantacci, M E ; Mettivier, G ; Montesi, M C ; Novelli, M ; Quattrocchi, M ; Rosso, V ; Russo, P ; Stefanini, A
In this paper we present the first tests of a digital imaging system based on a silicon pixel detector bump-bonded to an integrated circuit operating in single photon counting mode. The X-rays sensor is a 300 mu m thick silicon, 14 by 14 mm/sup 2/, upon which a matrix of 256 * 256 pixels has been built. [...]

Characterization of Medipix3 With Synchrotron Radiation / Gimenez, E N (Diamond Light Source) ; Horswell, I (Diamond Light Source) ; Marchal, J (Diamond Light Source) ; Turecek, D (Prague, Tech. U.) ; Ballabriga, R (CERN) ; Tartoni, N (Diamond Light Source) ; Campbell, M (CERN) ; Llopart, X (CERN) ; Sawhney, K J S (Diamond Light Source)
Medipix3 is the latest generation of photon counting readout chips of the Medipix family. With the same dimensions as Medipix2 (256 x 256 pixels of 55 mu m x 55 mu m pitch each), Medipix3 is however implemented in an 8-layer metallization 0.13 mu m CMOS technology which leads to an increase in the functionality associated with each pixel over Medipix2.
