Nowadays, one of the main issues of the superconducting thin film resonant cavities is the Cu surface preparation. A better understanding of the impact of copper surface preparation on the morphological, superconductive (SC) and RF properties of the coating, is mandatory in order to improve the performances of superconducting cavities by coating techniques. A Seamless Quarter-wave Resonator for HIE-ISOLDE
/ Teixeira Lopez, Silvia (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Garlasché, Marco (CERN) ; Mikkola, Tommi (CERN) ; Miyazaki, Akira (CERN) ; Sublet, Alban (CERN) ; Venturini Delsolaro, Walter (CERN)
The superconducting linac booster for the HIE ISOLDE project, in operation at CERN, is based on NB/Cu coated Quarter Wave Resonators. The performance of the series cavities has been limited by defects in the copper substrates close to the EB weld. [...]

The new HIE-ISOLDE accelerator at CERN requires the production of 32 superconducting cavities (20 high- β and 12 low- β ) in order to increase the energy of the rare isotope beam delivered to the experiments. The Quarter Wave Resonators (QWR) cavities (0.3m diameter and 0.9m height for the high- β ) are made of OFE 3D-forged copper and are coated by DC-bias diode sputtering with a thin superconducting layer of niobium.
