As part of the development of very high field dipole magnets for particle accelerators, the Superconducting Magnet Program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is developing block-type dipole magnets. One of the main challenges of this geometry is to provide support to the coil in the aperture while maintaining an adequate clear bore. [...]

After the fabrication and test of HD1, a 16 T Nb$_3$Sn dipole magnet based on flat racetrack coil configuration, the Superconducting Magnet Program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is developing the Nb$_3$Sn dipole HD2. With a dipole field above 15 T, a 35 mm clear bore, and nominal field harmonics within a fraction of one unit, HD2 represents a further step towards the application of block-type coils to high-field accelerator magnets. Test results of HD2, a high field Nb$_{3}$Sn dipole with a 36 mm bore / Ferracin, P (LBNL, Berkeley)
The Superconducting Magnet Program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has developed the 1 m long Nb$_{3}$Sn dipole magnet HD2. With tilted (flared) ends to avoid obstructing a 36 mm clear bore, HD2 represents a step towards the use of block-type coils in high-field accelerator magnets [...]

Test of the High-Field Nb$_3$Sn Dipole Magnet HD3b / Marchevsky, M (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Caspi, S (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Cheng, D W (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Dietderich, D R (LBNL, Berkeley) ; DiMarco, J (Fermilab) ; Felice, H (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Ferracin, P (CERN) ; Godeke, A (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Hafalia, A R (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Joseph, J (LBNL, Berkeley) et al.
We report test results for the one meter long dipole HD3b, a block-type accelerator quality Nb_3Sn magnet built at LBNL with operational bore fields in the range of 13-15 T. The magnet is an upgrade of the previously reported HD2 and HD3a versions, with several modifications implemented to improve conductor positioning, reduce cable “hard-way” bending radius, and strengthen electrical insulation between cables and coil parts. Magnetic and mechanical design of a 15-T large aperture dipole magnet for cable testing / Sarasola, Xabier (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bruzzone, Pierluigi (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Ferracin, Paolo (CERN) ; Araujo, Douglas Martins (CERN) ; de Rijk, Gijs (CERN) ; Cau, Francesca (Fusion for Energy, Barcelona) ; Portone, Alfredo (Fusion for Energy, Barcelona) ; Testoni, Pietro (Fusion for Energy, Barcelona) ; Prestemon, Soren (LBNL, Berkeley) et al.
A large aperture Nb$_3$Sn dipole is proposed to replace the magnet assembly of EDIPO, which was irreversibly damaged in 2016. The goal is to generate a background field of 15 T at 4.2 K in a clear aperture of approximately 100×150 mm$^2$ and over a uniform length of 1000 mm in order to test superconducting cables for both fusion and high-energy physics applications.
