Feasibility of Slow-Extracted High-Energy Ions From the CERN Proton Synchrotron for CHARM / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; Charitonidis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN) ; Delrieux, Marc (CERN) ; Duraffourg, Michel (CERN) ; Emriskova, Natalia (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) et al.
The CHARM High-energy Ions for Micro Electronics Reliability Assurance (CHIMERA) working group at CERN is investigating the feasibility of delivering high energy ion beams to the CHARM facility for the study of radiation effects to electronics components engineered to operate in harsh radiation environments, such as space or high-energy accelerators. The Proton Synchrotron has the potential of delivering the required high energy and high-Z (in this case, Pb) ions for radiation tests over the relevant range of Linear Energy Transfer of ~ 10 - 40 MeV cm²/mg with a > 1 mm penetration depth in silicon, specifically for single event effect tests. Testing of space-bound microelectronics plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliability of electronics exposed to the challenging radiation environment of outer space. This contribution describes the beam optics studies carried out for the run held in November 2023 in the context of the CERN High-Energy Accelerators for Radiation Testing and Shielding (HEARTS) experiment. We present the progress related to CERN’s capacity of delivering highly penetrating, high-linear energy transfer (LET) heavy ions for radiation effect testing of electronic components within the CHARM High-energy Ions for Micro Electronics Reliability Assurance (CHIMERA) project. Profiting from the existing accelerator infrastructure, Monte Carlo simulations, and a 300- $\mu $ m-thick silicon diode, we highlight the beam characterization capabilities and a summary of the beam properties. Fast Spill Monitor Studies for the SPS Fixed Target Beams / Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Belohrad, David (CERN) ; Bergamaschi, Michele (CERN) ; Calvo Giraldo, Eva (CERN) ; Effinger, Ewald (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Martin Nieto, Miguel (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) et al.
At the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) the proton beam is supplied to the fixed target experiments in the North Area facility (NA) via a slow extraction process, taking place at 400 GeV. The monitoring of the spill quality during the extraction, lasting 4.8 seconds with the present SPS setup, is of high interest for minimising beam losses and providing the users with uniform proton-on-target rates. Production of slow extracted beams for CERN's East Area at the Proton Synchrotron / Delrieux, M (CERN) ; Sota, P Arrutia (CERN) ; Bass, T (CERN) ; Bilko, K (CERN) ; Coly, M (CERN) ; Cotte, D (CERN) ; Fraser, M A (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, R (CERN) ; Huschauer, A (CERN) ; Lasheen, A (CERN) et al.
Since the upgrade and renovation of the East Experimental Area at CERN during Long Shutdown 2 (LS2: 2019 - 2021), demand has increased for slowly extracted beam from the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS). The East Area is a multi-user facility carrying out a diverse experimental physics programme. [...]

Performance of the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) with Xenon beams / Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Albright, Simon (CERN) ; Andujar, Oscar (CERN) ; Angoletta, Maria Elena (CERN) ; Axensalva, Jerome (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Baud, Guillaume (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Bozzolan, Michele (CERN) ; Cettour Cave, Stephane (CERN) et al.
In 2017 the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring demonstrated once more the feasibility of injecting, accumulating, cooling and accelerating a new nuclei, $^{129}$Xe${39+}$. The operation of this new ion species started at the beginning of March with the start up of the xenon ion source and the Linac3. [...]

Heavy ion beam characterization for radiation effects testing at CERN using Monte Carlo simulations and experimental benchmarking / Waets, A (CERN) ; Bilko, K (CERN) ; Brethoux, D (CERN) ; Cerutti, F (CERN) ; Charitonidis, N (CERN) ; Delrieux, M (CERN) ; Esposito, L (CERN) ; Durrafourg, M (CERN) ; Fraser, M (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, R (CERN) et al.
The CHIMERA (up to December 2022) and HEARTS (as of January 2023) projects aim to facilitate radiation effects testing of electronics components using heavy ion beams before deployment in harsh radiation environments such as space or high energy accelerators. The required (micro-) electronics reliability assurance testing conditions can be met by using 100 MeV/n - 5 GeV/n Pb ion beams extracted from CERN’s Proton Synchrotron (PS) which have a surface Linear Energy Transfer (LET) range of 10-40 MeV cm2/mg, >1 mm penetration depth in silicon and several cm FWHM beam size. Radiation to Electronics Impact on CERN LHC Operation: Run 2 Overview and HL-LHC Outlook / Aguiar, Ygor (CERN) ; Apollonio, Andrea (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Prelipcean, Daniel (CERN) ; Sabaté-Gilarte, Marta (CERN)
After the mitigation measures implemented during Run 1 (2010-2012) and Long Shutdown 1 (LS1, 2013-2014), the number of equipment failures due to radiation effects on electronics (R2E) leading to LHC beam dumps and/or machine downtime has been sufficiently low as to yield a minor impact on the accelerator performance. During Run 2 (2015-2018) the R2E related failures per unit of integrated luminosity remained below the target value of 0.5 events/fb-1, with the sole exception of the 2015 run during which the machine commissioning took place. Power Deposition Studies for Crystal-Based Heavy Ion Collimation in the LHC / Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Waets, Andreas (CERN) ; Wrobel, Frederic (IES, Montpellier)
The LHC heavy-ion program with 208Pb⁸²⁺ beams is foreseen to benefit from a significant intensity upgrade in 2022. A performance limitation may arise from ion fragments scattered out of the collimators in the betatron cleaning insertion, which risk quenching superconducting magnets during periods of short beam lifetime.
