Mechanical Behavior of the Shielded HL-LHC Beam Screen during a Magnet Quench / Morrone, Marco (CERN) ; Garion, Cedric (CERN) ; Chiggiato, Paolo (CERN) ; Sacristan De Frutos, Oscar ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Fiscarelli, Lucio (CERN)
In the framework of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project, larger and shielded beam screens will be installed in the beam pipe of the superconducting magnets of the insertion next to the ATLAS and CMS detectors. The beam screen is a complex assembly that guarantees the vacuum requirements while shielding the magnet cold mass from the induced heat loads. [...]

Novel Materials for Collimators at LHC and its Upgrades / Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Dallocchio, Alessandro (CERN) ; Garlasche, Marco (CERN) ; Gentini, Luca (CERN) ; Gradassi, Paolo (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Rossi, Adriana (CERN) ; Sacristan De Frutos, Oscar (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN ; Turin Polytechnic) et al.
Collimators for last-generation particle accelerators like the LHC, must be designed to withstand the close interaction with intense and energetic particle beams, safely operating over an extended range of temperatures in harsh environments, while minimizing the perturbing effects, such as instabilities induced by RF impedance, on the circulating beam. The choice of materials for collimator active components is of paramount importance to meet these requirements, which are to become even more demanding with the increase of machine performances expected in future upgrades, such as the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Characterisation of the Mechanical Behaviour of Superconducting Cables Used in High Field Magnets From Room Temperature Down to 77K / Sacristan De Frutos, Oscar (CERN) ; Daly, Michael (CERN) ; Ferracin, Paolo (CERN) ; Fichera, Claudio (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Mikkola, Tommi (CERN) ; Savary, Frederic (CERN) ; Vallone, Giorgio (CERN)
A comprehensive knowledge of the mechanical properties of the superconducting cable used in high-field magnets is of paramount importance to study and model the behaviour of the magnet coil from assembly to the operational conditions at cryogenic temperature. The mechanical characterisation of such kind of materials presents practical challenges associated with the heterogeneity of the materials, the geometry, size and quality of the samples that can be produced out of actual cables. Thermo-Physical and Mechanical Characterisation of Novel Materials under Development for HL-LHC Beam Intercepting Devices / Sacristan De Frutos, Oscar (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Bianchi, Laura (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Guardia, Jorge (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
The collimation system for high energy particle accelerators as HL-LHC, must be designed to withstand the close interaction with intense and energetic particle beams, safely operating over an extended range of temperatures in extreme conditions (pressure, strain-rate, radiation), which are to become more demanding with the High Luminosity LHC. In order to withstand such conditions, the candidate materials must possess among other properties outstanding thermal shock resistance and high thermal and electrical conductivity, condition only met by advanced or novel materials. Finite Element Analysis and Experimental Validation of Low-Pressure Beam Windows for XCET Detectors at CERN / Buesa Orgaz, Jan (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Romagnoli, Giulia (CERN) ; Sacristan De Frutos, Oscar (CERN) ; Sanchez Galan, Francisco (CERN)
In the framework of the renovation and consolidation of experimental areas at CERN, a low-pressure design beam superimposed windows (250 µm Mylar and 150 µm polyethylene) for the Threshold Cherenkov counters (XCET) has been modelled and verified for its implementation. The XCET is a detector used to count the number of selected charged particles in the beam by adjusting the pressure that leads to the emission of Cherenkov photons only above certain pressure threshold.
