Effects of the extraction voltage applied by the puller-electrode on the H$^−$ extraction in the Linac4 negative ion source
/ Abe, S (Keio U.) ; Nishioka, S (Keio U.) ; Mattei, S (CERN) ; Hatayama, A (Keio U.) ; Lettry, J (CERN)
In order to understand the H$^−$ extraction mechanism and investigate the effect of the extraction voltage applied by the puller-electrode on the H$^−$ extraction in the Linac4 negative ion source, we are developing a 2D3V-PIC (two dimensions in the real space and three dimensions in the velocity space, Particle in Cell) model with volume produced H$^−$ ions. It is shown that how to take the magnetic filter field direction is important for the 2D modeling to take into account the important 3D effect of electron $E \times B$ drift. [...]

In order to make the predictive simulation tools for the extracted beam current and emittance in the Linac4 H− ion source, we have launched the development of the integrated model for the H− ion beam formation and extraction process. More specifically, our 3D KEIO-Beam Formation and eXtraction (3D KEIO-BFX) is coupled with the NINJA, IBSIMU and TRAVEL. [...]

Analysis of H− extraction in the Linac4 negative ion source by 2.5D particle simulation
/ Abe, S (Keio U.) ; Nishioka, S (Keio U.) ; Mattei, S (CERN) ; Miyamoto, K (Naruto U. of Education) ; Hatayama, A (Keio U.) ; Lettry, J (CERN)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the extraction mechanisms of the H− ions in the Linac4 negative ion source by using an improved two-dimensional in real space and three-dimensional in velocity space Particle in Cell (2D3V-PIC) model. In this model, the following collision processes of the surface produced H− (Hsp−) ions have been introduced and the effects of the collisions on H− extraction have been analyzed: elastic (Hsp− - H2) and charge exchange (Hsp− - H). [...]

Numerical simulation of the RF plasma discharge in the Linac4 H$^−$ ion source
/ Mattei, S (CERN ; CRPP, Lausanne) ; Nishida, K (Keio U.) ; Onai, M (Keio U.) ; Lettry, J (CERN) ; Tran, M Q (CRPP, Lausanne) ; Hatayama, A (Keio U.)
This paper presents a Particle-In-Cell Monte Carlo Collision simulation of the Radio-Frequency (RF) plasma heating in the Linac4 H$^−$ ion source at CERN. The model self-consistently takes into account the electromagnetic field generated by the RF coil, the external static magnetic fields and the resulting plasma response, including a kinetic description of the charged species (e$^−$, H$^+$, H$^+_2$, H$^+_3$, H$^−$), as well as the atomic and molecular (vibrationally resolved) populations. CERN’s 160 MeV H−linear accelerator (Linac4) is a key constituent of the injector chain upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider that is being installed and commissioned. A cesiated surface ion source prototype is being tested and has delivered a beam intensity of 45 mA within an emittance of 0.3 π ⋅ mm ⋅ mrad. [...]

Plasma impedance prediction model and impedance matching by frequency tuning in radio frequency negative ion sources
/ Kobayashi, W (Keio U.) ; Nishida, K (Keio U.) ; Mattei, S (CERN) ; Lettry, J (CERN) ; Hatayama, A (Keio U.)
A radio frequency (RF) driven type hydrogen (H−) source is used as an injector of Linac4. The power transfer efficiency between the RF generator and the ion source plasma is one of the important parameters that determines the extracted H− beam current. [...]
