RF Characterisation of New Coatings for Future Circular Collider Beam Screens / Krkotić, Patrick (CELLS - ALBA, LLS ; Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Granados, Xavier (Barcelona, Autonoma U.) ; Gutierrez, Joffre (Barcelona, Autonoma U.) ; Hannah, Adrian (Daresbury) ; Malyshev, Oleg B (Daresbury) ; O'Callaghan, J M (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Pérez, Francis (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Pont, Montserrat (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Puig, Teresa (Barcelona, Autonoma U.) et al.
For the future high energy colliders being under the design at this moment, the choice of a low surface impedance beam screen coating material has become of fundamental importance to ensure sufficiently low beam impedance and consequently guaranteed stable operation at high currents. We have studied the use of high-temperature superconducting coated conductors as possible coating materials for the beam screen of the FCC-hh. [...]

High frequency response of thick REBCO coated conductors in the framework of the FCC study / Romanov, Artur (CSIC, Catalunya) ; Krkotić, Patrick (CELLS - ALBA, LLS ; Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Telles, Guilherme (CSIC, Catalunya) ; O'Callaghan, Joan (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Pont, Montse (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Perez, Francis (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Granados, Xavier (CSIC, Catalunya) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Puig, Teresa (CSIC, Catalunya) ; Gutierrez, Joffre (CSIC, Catalunya)
A thorough microwave response study of high temperature superconductors, considered as an alternative beam screen coating, has become integral in the design decisions for CERN’s future research infrastructure. Here, we present the surface resistance $R_{s}$ of various $\text {REBa}_{2}\text {Cu}_{3}\text {O}_{7-x}$ (RE = rare earth) coated conductors available in large scale as a function of magnetic field in a broad temperature range measured by a Hakki–Coleman type resonator with resonant frequency $\nu \approx {8}\,{\text {GHz}}$. To assess the feasibility of using high-temperature superconductors for the beam screens of future circular colliders, we have undertaken a study of the power dependence of the microwave surface resistance in state-of-the-art REBCO coated conductors at about 8 GHz and 50 K. We have employed a dielectric resonator to produce radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields on the surface of the coated conductors having amplitudes similar to those generated by proton bunches circulating in the vacuum chamber of the proposed future circular collider Hadron-Hadron (FCC-hh) at CERN We show that surface resistances in REBCO coated conductors without artificial pinning centers are more affected by a RF magnetic field than those containing nano-inclusions. Evaluation of the impact of REBCO-coated conductors on the resistive wall impedance of the FCC-hh / Tagdulang, N D (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Günzel, T (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Pont, M (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Krkotic, P (CERN) ; O'Callaghan, J M (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.)
The beam screen for the Future Circular hadron-hadron Collider (FCC-hh) has a baseline design based on a copper (Cu) coating. Calculations have indicated that the resistive wall impedance will be the major contributor to the beam impedance for the FCC-hh at both injection and collision and that Cu might be on the limit to ensure beam stability. Potential impedance reduction by REBCO-coated conductors as beam screen coating for the Future Circular Hadron Collider / Krkotić, P (CELLS - ALBA, LLS ; Barcelona, Polytechnic U. ; CERN) ; Tagdulang, N D (CELLS - ALBA, LLS ; Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Calatroni, S (CERN) ; O'Callaghan, J M (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Pont, M (CELLS - ALBA, LLS)
The Future Circular Collider study creates a conceptual design for a post-LHC particle accelerator using 16 T superconducting dipoles to achieve collision energies of up to 100 TeV in a 90 km circumference ring. A copper-coated beam screen, similar to that used in the LHC, is planned. [...]

The surface resistance of state-of-the-art REBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7−x}$ coated conductors has been measured at 8 GHz versus temperature and magnetic field. We show that the surface resistance of REBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7−x}$ strongly depends on the microstructure of the material. [...]

Performance of high-temperature superconducting REBCO coated conductors under synchrotron irradiation for future circular colliders / Krkotić, Patrick (CELLS - ALBA, LLS ; Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Traver, Oriol (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Tagdulang, Nikki (CELLS - ALBA, LLS ; Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Manuel O’Callaghan, Juan (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Pont, Montse (CELLS - ALBA, LLS)
The influence of medium-to-high energy synchrotron radiation (SR) (≈10–100 keV) produced by the ALBA Synchrotron Light Source on state-of-the-art REBCO coated conductors (CCs) has been studied to assess the feasibility of using high-temperature superconductors for the beam screen of future circular colliders. Long-term irradiation studies were conducted with ex-situ surface resistance testing by using a dielectric resonator. [...]

CompactLight (XLS) is an International Collaboration of 24 partners and 5 third parties, funded by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. The main goal of the project, which started in January 2018 with a duration of 36 months, is the design of an hard X-ray FEL facility beyond today’s state of the art, using the latest concepts for bright electron photo-injectors, high-gradient accelerating structures, and innovative short-period undulators. The H2020 CompactLight Project aims at designing the next generation of compact X-rays Free-Electron Lasers, relying on very high gradient accelerating structures (X-band, 12 GHz), the most advanced concepts for high brightness electron photo injectors, and innovative compact short-period undulators. Compared to existing facilities, the proposed facility will benefit from a lower electron beam energy, due to the enhanced undulators performance, and will be significantly more compact, with a smaller footprint, as a consequence of the lower energy and the high-gradient X-band structures.
