The laser ion source trap for highest isobaric selectivity in online exotic isotope production / Schwellnus, F (Mainz U.) ; Catherall, R (CERN) ; Wendt, K (Mainz U.) ; Mattolat, C (Mainz U.) ; Rothe, S (CERN) ; Crepieux, B (CERN) ; Blaum, K (Heidelberg, Max Planck Inst.) ; Fedosseev, V (CERN) ; Gottwald, T (Mainz U.) ; Kluge, H -J (Darmstadt, GSI) et al.
The improvement in the performance of a conventional laser ion source in the laser ion source and trap (LIST) project is presented, which envisages installation of a repeller electrode and a linear Paul trap/ion guide structure. This approach promises highest isobaric purity and optimum temporal and spatial control of the radioactive ion beam produced at an online isotope separator facility. [...]

The selectivity of a hot cavity resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS) is most often limited by contributions from competing surface ionization of the hot walls of the ionization cavity. In this article we present investigations on the properties of designated high temperature, low work function materials regarding their performance and suitability as cavity material for RILIS. [...]

First application of the Laser Ion Source and Trap (LIST) for on-line experiments at ISOLDE / Fink, D A (CERN ; Heidelberg, Max Planck Inst. ; Heidelberg U.) ; Catherall, R (CERN) ; Imai, N (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Blaum, K (Heidelberg, Max Planck Inst.) ; Rothe, S (CERN ; Mainz U.) ; Sjoedin, M (GANIL) ; Rossel, R E (CERN ; Mainz U.) ; Kron, T (Mainz U.) ; Marsh, B A (CERN) ; Richter, S D (Mainz U.) et al.
The Laser Ion Source and Trap (LIST) provides a new mode of operation for the resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS) at ISOLDE/CERN, reducing the amount of surface-ionized isobaric contaminants by up to four orders of magnitude. After the first successful on-line test at ISOLDE in 2011 the LIST was further improved in terms of efficiency, selectivity, and reliability through several off-line tests at Mainz University and at ISOLDE. The suppression of isobaric contaminations is of growing importance for many scientific programs using radioactive isotopes produced at isotope separation on-line (ISOL) facilities, such as ISOLDE-CERN. A solid tungsten proton-to-neutron converter has been used for ten years to produce neutron-rich fission fragments from an UC x target while suppressing the production of neutron-deficient isobaric contaminants.
