A two-step resonance photo-ionization scheme has been used to ionize samarium atoms in the SPES tantalum hot-cavity ion source. The effect of the ion load on the ion beam time structure and the laser enhancement of the ion yield has been studied at different ion source temperatures. [...]

A setup for vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy of the $^{229}$Th low-energy isomer
/ Kraemer, Sandro (KU Leuven ; LMU, Garching) ; Chhetri, Premaditya (KU Leuven) ; Bara, Silvia (KU Leuven) ; Claessens, Arno (KU Leuven) ; De Witte, Hilde (KU Leuven) ; Elskens, Yens (KU Leuven) ; Ferrer, Rafael (KU Leuven) ; Kudryavtsev, Yuri (KU Leuven) ; Sels, Simon (KU Leuven) ; Van Den Bergh, Paul (KU Leuven) et al.
The ground-state transition of the low-energy isomer in $^{229}$Th has been proposed as the basis for the development of a novel optical clock as a tool for fundamental-physics studies. Vacuum-ultraviolet studies of the 𝛽-decay of 229Ac recently enabled to measure the de-excitation energy of the isomer with a sevenfold improvement in precision compared to previous results by directly observing photons from the isomer’s radiative decay. At CERN-ISOLDE, high-purity radioactive ion beams of $^{219}$Fr and $^{221}$RaF were investigated with $\alpha$-decay spectroscopy at the CRIS and ASET experiments in the course of three different experimental campaigns. The half-life of $^{215}$At, $\alpha$-decay daughter of $^{219}$Fr, is measured to be 36.3(3)[9]μs, and that of $^{221}$Ra was determined to be 26.2(1)[6]s, both of which are well in line with the trends in this region of the nuclear landscape but at odds with some of the reported literature..

A Laser Ion Source and Trap (LIST) for a thick-target, isotope-separation on-line facility has been implemented at CERN ISOLDE for the production of pure, laser-ionized, radioactive ion beams. It offers two modes of operation, either as an ion guide, which performs similarly to the standard ISOLDE resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS), or as a more selective ion source, where surface-ionized ions from the hot ion-source cavity are repelled by an electrode, while laser ionization is done within a radio-frequency quadrupole ion guide.
